Here's the DHSS Recap / Top Headlines on the 1st Round of the OHSAA 2022 football playoffs in the Miami Valley area.
TROTWOOD WINS SHOOTOUT IN GAME OF THE WEEK
The Trotwood Rams showed why they could be a force in the D-3 division as they knocked off Chaminade Julienne 40-34 at Glass Stadium.
Star QB Tim Carpenter threw for 2 TD's in 14-19 passing with 201 yards, and he also ran for 113 more with a TD as the Rams amassed almost 500 total yards in the back-and-forth affair. Rams RB Donavuan Gales ran for 2 TDs and Michael Smith and Quinton Johnson each caught a TD.
Chaminade rolled up the numbers on the ground (465 yards) behind the likes of Josiah Payne (28 rush, 196 yards, 2 TDs), Nydrell Wright (7 rush, 106 yds), Donaven Cummings (9 rush, 69 yds, TD) and QB Ryan Peltier (13 rush, 60 yds, 2 TD). But to no avail. Trotwood would never give up the lead in a big win for coach Graham and the organization, as they capitalized on the Eagles turning the ball over twice and failing on two 4th down conversions which were crucial. Trotwood had 0 turnovers on the night.
XENIA STUNNED IN OT
The Xenia Bucs saw their dream season come to an end as they lost to Little Miami 27-24 in double OT. With Ramon Browder out and Probable MVL Player of the Year Trei'Shaun Sanders getting hurt during the game, it changed the outcome of what should have been a solid win for the Bucs. However, Little Miami was able to get the passing game going, and despite being stuffed in the running game, Grant Maupin rushed for 2 TD's and threw for another and Little Miami made a game sealing FG to shock the #4 ranked team in the final D-2 OHSAA poll.
"I'm hurt for our fans but it was a great season for us. This will sting for a while but hopefully we can regroup and bounce back next season. I'm proud of the team and we fought to the end, despite the cirumstances." Xenia Coach Maurice Harden said after the heartbreaking loss.
SPRINGFIELD ROLLS
The Springfield Wildcats came firing early and often as the duo of Bryce Schondelmyer and Anthony Brown once again proved to be a deadly combination and the Cats downed the Lewis Center Olentangy Orange team 35-7. Brown would catch 8 passes for 180 yards and 3 TD's to lead the Cats to the win. Star Linebacker Jaivan Norman (and front runner for GWOC Defensive Player of the Year) would amass 11 total tackles and a Interception to lead the defense. Schondelmyer threw for over 400 yards in another impressive performance for the budding star QB. The Cats will face Fairmont next weekend in the 2nd round.
FAIRMONT POWERS PAST WAYNE IN HUGE COMEBACK
The Fairmont Firebirds used its running game and a 4th quarter spurt to down the Wayne Warriors 24-20 in the 1st round of the OHSAA Playoffs. Wayne had taken a 20-10 lead early in the 4th after a FG by Luke Daulton. After that Fairmont would pound out two clutch drives, led by possible Player of the Year RB Drew Baker, who would run for 170 yards on 30 carries. Fairmont would cap off the final touchdown drive with a Baker TD, solidifying the win with the ground and pound offense. Zachariah Williams would rush for 132 yards and a TD in the loss for Wayne. Fairmont will face Springfield in the 2nd round in Springfield.
SPRINGBORO ROLLS BEHIND YATES, OFFENSE
The Springboro Panthers took advantage of their home game and exploded on Oak Hill as Willezhaun Yates and Evan Russo provided the juice to send the Boro to a big win 42-10. After Oak Hill would score on a TD run, Springboro would roll off 35 straight points to take a 35-7 lead at half, and for all purposes, end the game. Yates would score 3 TD's and Russo would throw for 3 TD's in a very efficent game (16-19) sending the Panthers into the next round.
CENTERVILLE POWERS PAST NORTHMONT
The Centerville Elks used a fast start and a powerful 3rd quarter run to defeat the Northmont Bolts 34-21 at Centerville HS. Braylon Newcomb would rush for 4 TDs and throw another to Nic Bruder, as the Elks would jump out 13-0 only to watch that lead evaporate behind Cahke Cortner and the Bolts, who took a 14-13 lead in the 3rd quarter. However, the Elks would score 3 straight TDs to end the Bolts hopes and move to the 2nd round. Bruder would also grab a interception as the Elks forced 2 turnovers and a failed 4th down conversion as well.
ALTER MOVES ON WITH TOUGH WIN
The Alter Knights will move onto the 2nd round of the OHSAA playoffs with a clutch and suprising road win over Reading 21-14. In a tough game, the Knights was able to pull out the gutty win behind clutch defensive play and a big TD drive, and now will play in the 2nd round.
MCNICHOLAS ENDS NORTHRIDGE SEASON
Cincinnati McNicholas came into the game with a plan and executed it to perfection with a big win over Northridge 42-12. Braden Bobo threw for 4 TD's in the big win and they jumped out to a 42-0 lead by halftime. DB Nate Coyler dominated for McNicholas, with 3 interceptions on the night, completely disrupting the Northridge passing attack.
Despite the loss, Northridge had a good season (7-4) under coach Smith.
PIQUA ROUTS STEBBINS IN WEEK 10 REMATCH
The Piqua Indians was able to hold off Stebbins in the final game of the regular season, only to have to play them right back in the 1st round of the OHSAA Playoffs, and this time, it was more of the same, except no doubt left after a 51-6 blowout win.
The Indians used their offensive attack (Brady Ouhl 12-17, 2 TD's) the rushing attack (Ky Warner, 124 yards, 2 TD's; Sam Schmiesing 2 TD rushes) and the special teams (Dre'Sean Roberts, 54 yard punt return) to shut down any thoughts of a Stebbins upset.
D-1 commit Adrian Norton ran a 99-yard TD back on a kickoff in his final game, and Norton should be a candidate for player of the year in the MVL.
TIPPECANOE CLOBBERS HILLSBORO
The Tippecanoe Red Devils continued their blistering hot play with a shutout win over Hillsboro as Player of the Year Candidated Liam Poronsky threw for 3 TD's and Star RB Xavier Jones ran for 3 more as the Red Devils shut out Hillsboro 42-0. Jones would start the scoring with a 76-yard touchdown run, followed by 3 straight TD passes from Poronsky - to Stanley Cline, and the #4 state ranked Red Devils move to the next round. The defense, led by Cael Liette, forced 2 fumbles, intercepted a pass, and stopped Hillsboro on two 4th down conversions.
SIDNEY FALLS TO KINGS
The Sidney Yellow Jackets fell to Kings by the score of 56-14 as Kings QB Will Kocher threw for 4 TD passes in the big win. Kings took a big lead into the half, and Sidney was not able to recover. WR Michael Mussari (9 catches, 217 yds, 3 TDs) and Jake Cameron (9 catches, 140 yds) did the heavy damage while RB Jay Holubetz ran for 3 TD's as well. WR Sam Reynolds caught 8 passes for 111 yards and a TD in the loss for Sidney.
ANDERSON KNOCKS OFF TROY
Anderson came into the game with a nice arial assault, and it continued, as QB Griffin Scaif went 27-35 with 311 yards and 4 TDs in the big win over Troy 44-7. While Troy rushing attack was solid (Jahari Ward, 92 yds, Nick Kawecki 82 yds, TD) it was nowhere near enough to compete against Anderson, who moves to the 2nd round.
BADIN ROUTS WOODWARD
The #1 team in the D-3 OHSAA Rankings routed Woodward to move to the 2nd round 44-0. Led by the star QB, Badin exploded early and often and shut out Woodward en route to their 11th win. The GCL champs looks every bit as dominant as advertised.
BELLBROOK DEFEATS CELINA BEHIND RUSHING ATTACK
The Bellbrook Eagles, ranked in the OHSAA state poll, used the rushing attack of Star RB Elijah Brooks to secure a 1st round win 42-21. Brooks would run for 192 yards on 29 carries and 5 TD's on the night to lead the Eagles to a big win.
EATON KNOCKS OFF FENWICK
Eaton was able to outlast Fenwick and get a big road win to improve to 7-4 on the season. They were able to use a balanced attack and 14 points in the final quarter to get the upset win. QB Brock Ebright, RB Danny Cadwell (96 yds, TD) and the defense lead Eaton to a win. Ebright would throw a TD pass, run for a TD and catch a TD in the big win.
BROOKVILLE POUNDS PURCELL
Brookeville used its stout defense and a heavy dose of RB Tim Davis to grab a big 1st round win against Purcell Marian 41-7. Davis would run for 4 TDs and 135 yards in a huge effort to send the Devils to the next round.
VALLEY VIEW CRUSHES CARLISLE
The Valley View Spartans used a balanced rushing attack to defeat Carlisle 38-8 as they had a two-headed attack which was too much for the Indians to handle. RB Micah Valente was dominant, rushing for 123 yards on only 8 attempts and he scored 3 times to lead Valley View. Austin Stidham ran for 83 yards on 10 carries as well for the Spartans, who move to the second round.
MONROE STOPS HUGHES
In a surprise, Monroe used its physical running game to dominate the game against Hughes, who were the favorite in the game. RBs E.J Jyan (17 carries, 95 yds, 2 TDs;) Landon Wynn (11 carries, 119 yds, 2 TDs) did the heavy lifting in the 53-15 win.
