Thursday Night Lights: Can Meadowdale Keep Same Energy Against Thurgood? Sidney - Troy Preview; Top 150 Rankings Drop Tomorrow

Meadowdale, Dunbar Battle With City Title Hopes on Line in Thursday Night Lights

Meadowdale has heard all the whispers about how they "Haven't beaten quality teams" or how "They not really that good" after they got off to a very good 3-1 start. Well tonight, they get a chance to take on a City League opponent as they enter the City League portion of the games.

Thurgood lost last week to Ponitz, as they scored late, but wasn't able to put together a complete effort to get their first win. They will look to tonight to see if they can get that done against Meadowdale, who, quite frankly, are one of  the biggest storylines of the early season.

The Lions currently sit at 15 in the Division 5 Region in OHSAA playoff standings. Only the top 12 make the playoffs. They are coming off a road loss, their first of the season.

Can the Lions running game, led by Mckinney and Peebles and the leadership of Sumlin keep the Lions on track for a playoff berth, the first since the mid 90s? Or will the Cougars figure out a way to get some of their dynamic playmakers the ball and stuff the perennial offense of Earl White and his staff?

Sidney, Troy Both Look to Regroup Tonight

The Troy Trojans and Sidney Yellow Jackets will battle tonight at Troy HS as both teams look to get into the W column. With both teams sitting at 2-3, this game is crucial to both teams pushing towards a playoff berth. Sidney was no match for Piqua last week in a blowout loss, while Troy got back on track to get a big win and get closer to 500.

Can Troy and Donnie Stanley (coming off a 5 TD performance) hold down a Sidney team who played a tough opponent and boast some good young talent, led by fab frosh RB Julius Spradling and defensive stud DL Jaden Swiger who is a senior. In order to defeat Troy, the Yellow Jackets need the senior QB to play at a elite level tonight.

Week 5 Recap: Cats, Elks, Wayne Roll; Full Recap of Key Games

 Week 5 HS Football Recap

 By Deon Cash

Here are the Top Headlines / Recap  for Week 5

 Springfield Stays Undefeated

The Wildcats stayed undefeated with a big win over Beavercreek.

Mr. Football Candidate Tae'Sean Smoot was dynamic as usual, and the lockdown defense once again was led with DL Tywuan January and DB Delian Bradley.

The Cats The Cats are now ranked #4 in the state in the OHSAA D-1 polls.

Meadowdale Falls on Road For 1st Loss

The Lions great start took a hit when they lost on the road to Summit Country Day 65-28.

In a game which they were down early, the Lions rallied in the 2nd quarter but to no avail as they fall to 3-1. Country Day used a offensive attack which was too much to overcome.

Piqua Rolls Over Sidney, Stay Atop MVL

The Piqua Indians scored on a Bryson Roberts pick-6 INT on the 1st play from scrimmage, and the rout was on as the Indians move to 5-0 on the season.

Roberts nabbed 2 INTs on the night as Sidney was no match in a 42-7 loss. The Indians are currently the top team in the Miami Valley League and ranked #8 in the OHSAA D-2 State poll.

Centerville Wins 2nd Straight

The Elks ran over Northmont in a surprise shutout as the offense found its rhythm and the defense was lights out.

Centerville moves to 4-1 while Northmont falls to 2-3. D-1 commit Chase Harrison led the Elks to the victory with 4 TDs on the night.

Wayne Stops Miamisburg To Stay In GWOC Race

The Wayne Train took out Miamisburg to move to 3-2 on the season.

Tyler Dorsey ran for a TD to get Wayne rolling and the Vikings didn’t respond to the levels they have played this season. Miamisburg falls to 3-2.

Ponitz Stops Thurgood, Wins 2nd Straight

The Ponitz Panthers grabbed their 2nd win in a row and first in the City League as they stopped the Thurgood Marshall Cougars 34-6 on Thursday night.

Storm White scored 3 TDs for the Panthers to lead the attack. Ponitz withstood a big kickoff return for a TD by Thurgood late to win big and sit at 2-3 this season. Thurgood falls to 0-5.

Belmont Grabs 1st W Under Paschal

The Belmont Bison garnered their 1st win of the season on the road as 1st year Head Coach Jordan Paschal was able to get his boys to scrap out a 9-6 win on the road.

Led by junior 2-way stud DB/ RB /WR Damir Dewberry, the win gives the defending City League champs some juice as they prep for City League games.

Local Coach Leads Withrow to 5-0 Start

Kali Jones, a former Wayne assistant coach, now Head coaching the Withrow Tigers, has the Tigers at 5-0 on the season after a 24-0 win over Trotwood.

With the score 12-0 late in the 2nd quarter the Rams had a chance to get in the game but they were intercepted on the goal line. The Rams would never get closer after that.

The Tigers will take on Taft (2-2) on Saturday at Withrow Stadium, and that should be a good one as one of the big rivalries in the Cincinnati Public League.

Springboro Gives Fairmont 1st Loss

The Springboro Panthers was able to score late and win due to a 2-point conversion as they upset the Fairmont Firebirds 15-14.

Fairmont (4-1) must regroup as they host the vaunted Springfield Wildcats in week 6 on Friday night.

Tipp Blows By Stebbins To Stay At Top of MVL

Tippecanoe stayed on pace in the MVL with Piqua as the only undefeated teams still left, after a 50-24 win over Stebbins.

The Red Devils came out firing, and amassed almost 500 total yards of offense. Rising RB Omar Holloway led the Indians with 100 yards rushing and a TD, but it was not enough as the Red Devils had 2 guys with over 100 yards rushing (Everhart & Poronsky) and another guy with 88 (Caldwell).

MEADOWDALE BLITZES HILLCREST 40-0, MOVES TO 2-0; STEBBINS ROLLS PAST WEST CARROLLTON, STAYS UNDEFEATED

 MEADOWDALE BLITZES HILLCREST 40-0, SHOWS THEY ARE NO JOKE;

SUMLIN,PEEBLES, HODGE MOVES LIONS TO 2-0

The Meadowdale Lions are back.

Meadowdale came into the season with renewed hope and confidence that they could get the Lions historic football program back roaring and revitalized.

While the coaching staff wasn't sure if would be this year, they banked on the experience they had, and the energy they would get from their young squad in return to help the process.

On Thursday night the Lions showed, that they are a different team than in the previous years, as the Earl White led Lions ran roughshod over Hillcrest 40-0 in non league action on Thursday night lights in Week 3 of OHSAA fall sports.

With a nice home crowd to support the Lions would strike early. QB Charles Sumlin Jr lead the Lions on scoring drives as the Lions imposed their will.  Junior RB-WR Robert Peebles scored and did heavy damage like he did in week 1 while fabolous freshman Treyvon Hodge locked down on defense.

Sumlin and Peebles were the stars in the huge comeback win in Week 1 as well. Sumlin is a combo QB who can throw, run, and has the intelligence to lead as well while Peebles is a dynamic WR -RB Slot style player who is playing at a elite level right now.

With White calling the shots,  Assistant coaches Doug Spears, Marvan Gordon, and the great coaching staff running the offense and defense, the Lions have changed the whole tone of the program.

Last week they were playing Butler before the lighting and rain struck. The game was postponed, but Butler decided not to reschedule the game.  They played one series, in which the Lions went down the field on their 1st drive with no problems, but fumbled the ball in Butler territory.

Coincidence or just reality?

We're thinking reality, and the real is that teams won't be lining up to play these Lions for easy wins anymore.

Welcome back Meadowdale.

The Lions are currently the only team in the City with a win, so they have a real shot at winning the Dayton Public School league.

STEBBINS DOMINATES WEST CARROLLTON IN 2ND HALF AS KELLER, HOLLOWAY SHINE; NOW 3-0

The Stebbins Indians are 3-0 and they are a legit contender to win the Miami Valley League, after a big win over West Carrollton on Thursday night.

The dynamic duo of Nate Keller and Omar Holloway was too much for Pirates to overcome. Keller a All-League Performer,  threw for over 150 yards with 3 Total TDs, and Holloway,  a beast of a running back, ran for 167 yards and 2 TDs.

The 1st half was close, but in the 2nd half, Stebbins took contol as Holloway continued to show why he might be the best running back in Southwest Ohio.

The defense also locked down, shutting down the Priates in the 2nd half, with a forced fumble and 2 sacks to boot.

West Carrollton falls to 0-2 while Stebbins moves to 3-0, good for 1st place in the MVL.

KEY GAMES IN WEEK 3

Here are the key games in Week 3:

ALTER  VS MIAMISBURG

Teams end up playing each other after Covid-19 hits opponents. The Burg is sitting at 2-0, and playing well, while Alter coming off big win over Thurgood. Expect a great Atmosphere tonight.

SPRINGFIELD  VS LIMA SENIOR

Can the Cats go to Lima and handle business?  Trotwood was hit with Covid, causing the Cats to travel to Lima instead. With Mr Football Candidate Tae'Sean Smoot running the helm, can the Cats get another big road win?

CHAMINADE  VS  FAIRMONT

Can the Eagles knock off the tough and hungry Fairmont squad coming off a great performance at Trotwood? Both teams sit at 2-0 and have legit playoff chances.

CARLISLE    VS   NORTHRIDGE

Can Carlisle stop the Polar Bears from going 3-0 on the season? Northridge has came put with purpose early this year.

BEAVERCREEK   VS   DUNBAR

Which 0-2 team will do what it needs to get that first w?  Dunbar looked sharp for a half last week, while Beavercreek has yet to get it going.

PIQUA   VS.   TROY

In the rivalry game of the week, can the Trojans stop one of the best teams in the area in Piqua?  Most times, you can throw out tbhe records in this classic rivalry.
