Signing Day Results: Patton, Hoskins Jr, Miller, Guy, Gable, Foster, Jackson, Trice, Hooks Ink It Up; Which Local Teams Missed Out? Top 10 Unsigned players

Here's some of the the top Headlines, Results, from yesterdays High School Signing Day, which was exciting to say the least. Some of the best student athletes in Southwest Ohio:

Patton Push lands in Akron with LeBron and Co; Dayton, Wright State offer "Too Late"

 After a incredibly tense and thrilling basketball ride for star G Torrey Patton, the 2-Time Player of the Year and leader of the Trotwood Madison Rams decided to sign with Akron, turning down Wright State and Dayton in the process.

It was reported that Dayton made a offer in the middle of the night, as Flyers new coach Anthony Grant had gotten the word about Patton, albeit later than he would have liked. Or should have.

Much appreciated, but "Too late" Patton said.

While it was thought he might go to Duquesnse with LeBron James former coach Keith Dambrot (who was initially at Akron before taking job at Duquense), Patton was sold on the future of the Zips, where he fit in, where he really liked the city and the environment, and the fact that there is another local on the roster (Isiah Williams) also was a plus for Patton.

And where was Patton's first choice initially? Wright State

But the inconsistencies in the recruiting hurt the Raiders chances, and even though the 2nd push was very hard, and had Patton thinking twice, he never strayed far from Akron.

There were a couple tense moments as Wayne Head Coach Travis Trice was invited to the event by the Patton family. Some of the Trotwood staff wasn't pleased with this, but overall it was a dynamic event and a fitting day to a drama filled-but incredible to watch Movie Script type of year for Patton, the Rams and his family.

Congrats to the newest Akron Zip.
And yes we are predicticting it.
He will be a star in the MAC in 2 years.



        Hoskins Jr signs with Saginaw Valley State 

Darnell Hoskins Jr and dad celebrate signing at Thurgood HS

 Darnell Hoskins felt at home when he went to Saginaw Valley State, and knew that they wanted to put him in their immediate plans, so he surpised everyone when he made if official yesterday.
Hoskins had 3 other D-1s on the list (Miami (Ohio), Akron, Grambling St) but felt that the Cardinals was the right choice.

"I wanted to go where I can play right away, and they had a plan for me. They have a great program, one of he best D-2s in the country and they made me feel like family there."

His father, Darnell Hoskins, who went to Wisconsin before going to Dayton, was relieved, and proud to see his son make the decision, going against the grain and not selecting a D-1 school.

When asked what was his second choice?
"There wasn't one" Hoskins said. I knew when I left the campus that I wanted to be there.

Alter Star Braxtin Miller signs with Cowboys
Star PG Braxtin Miller signed with the Oklahoma State Cowboys yesterday.
Miller, a 3-time State Champion, will come right in and possibly start for the Cowboys. Miller, led the Knights to one of the greatest runs in Ohio History with the 3-peat, and should take her game to the next level next season.
Will Ohio State regret not signing the star guard?

Thurgood Star G Hooks signs with Ohio
Star G Cierra Hooks  (Thurgood Marshall) signed her letter of intent to go to Ohio yesterday. The 2-Time Player of the Year is very excited to have the opportunity to play on the next level. Hooks led the Cougars to some of the best records in School History in the last couple years.

Gable signs with Southeast Missouri State
One of the premiere big men in the Miami Valley decided to go to Southeast Missouri State, and signed the letter of intent on Monday.
Greenville Star F Isaiah Gable, a 6'7 Combo Forward, also runs track, and has a college ready skill set to with his frame.
Gable liked what the coaches had in plans for him, and liked the campus as well.
Gable could become a college star in the future, as he has all the tools to excel at the next level.

He lit it up in the Senior Showcase, as he literally jumped out of a long drive from a recruiting visit and lit it up in the 3-pt showcase, making 21 of  24 3-pointers putting on a shooting exhibition, and winning the event.

Chris Jackson inks deal with Urbana
Dunbar All-Ohio G Chris Jackson verbally signed to head to Urbana this fall. Jackson, a 6'3 Shooting Guard, will get his chance to show why he could be one of the real sleepers in the class. Jackson has D-1 ability and the Raiders or the Flyers should have maybe looked a littler harder at the clutch scorer.

Trice inks to go to Sinclair
Isiaah Trice, Travis Trice 3rd son to hit college, will be heading to Sinclair Community College this fall to play for the Tartans.

Trice decided to go that route, which will still give him a opportunity to possibly go D-1 after a year or so. Sinclair has one of the top Junior College programs (D-2) in the country and was ranked as high as #5 this season.

Trice is excited for the opportunity, and so is his dad.
"He will get a chance to continue his journey and get better in the process at a good school. I'm very happy for him." Travis said.

Guy headed to Defiance 

Jefferson star G headed to Defiance
Jefferson G Issac Guy signed his letter of Intent to go to Defiance as the dynamic G will get to continue his college. Guy has great 1 on 1 ability and will help the program immensely.

Signing Day tomorrow for Patton, Hoskins; Some interesting options could play out; Where Will they go?

It is now time for HS seniors to start signing hoop scholarships.

Where will local stars Darnell Hoskins and Torrey Patton end up? Maybe with Keith Dambrot & LeBron, or Grambling perhaps?

With all the excitement surrounding the Torrey Patton push, we wanted to analyze the stars Final 5 teams and see where Patton and friend and former Thurgood star Darnell Hoskins Jr will end up.

 Hoskins Jr, was the City League Player of the Year in 16, but decided to go to a prep school after his senior year, which enhanced his skills, development, and preparation for big time college ball.


While both will be making their announcements live tomorrow, Patton will do his at 9am (Trotwood), while Hoskins will do his at 3 (Thurgood Marshall).

Both players had great senior seasons, and now they will get a chance to shine at the next level.

Let's look at the teams and weigh the odds on where these 2 stars will end up.

Where will Patton Push lead the star guard?  

Torrey Patton Final 5: Akron, Miami (Ohio), Duquesne, Wright State, & Robert Morris 

Darnell Hoskins Jr Final 5: Akron, Miami (Ohio) Grambling St, Longford, & Saginaw Valley State 


When you look at Pattons final 5, there are a few things that stand out.

(1) The Impact of LeBron 
The fact that James spoke for Patton, this has resonated within Pattons circle and the State of Ohio for that matter. With LBJ'S former coach Keith Dambrough headed to Duquesne, will Patton follow? Word is that Akron went all out for the star, and would love to have the shooting guard.

(2) The local effect 
With Wright State and Miami, you have 2 schools in your back yard who joined the sweepstakes later in the game.

Wright State inquired about Patton as a junor but backed off for some reason, which didn't thrill the Patton circle.

Now the Raiders have hit the full court press button, especially since star G Mark Alstork is transferring out.

Miami has a new coach in Damon Frierson, and he made a nice impact on Patton and his family. Miami is a small school but big time in the fact that they have a solid program that is only 45 minutes from Dayton.

Where will Patton go? Will he stay close to home or will he head up north?
Will he go with Team LBJ?

When you get to Hoskins, he has both Miami (Ohio) & Akron as well, which makes for a intriguing prospect.


Could Hoskins and Patton go to the same school?
Hmmmm

Considering both schools have new coaches in the fold, it makes for a compelling situation if it is possible.

Patton will be a combo guard in college, possibly moving to the 2 spot, while Hoskins is a pure PG.

Hoskins has Grambling pushing hard as well, along with D-2 powers Longford and Saginaw Valley State

Hoskins has calculated every move, and this one won't be any different.

Hoskins and Patton in Miami Ohio red or Akron blue?
Hmmmmmm.....
Or will Patton suprise us with a selection to Duquesne or Robert Morris?

So quiet, but always caluclated.

Let the new journey begin for these 2 talented  young men.
Where ever it will be, look for both to make a major impact from Day 1.

City League Championship on the line; Wayne - Springfield rematch

Here's the key games this weekend as we hit the late stretch of the Hoop Season:

(1) City League Championship in balance as Dunbar travels to Thurgood.

   In the last 15 years, the City League hoop Championship has been decided by 2 teams - 

Dunbar and Thurgood. 

     And to no surprise to many, Thurgood Marshall and Dunbar will battle tonight for the City League crown.

  While The last time these teams played, Thurgood hit a huge 3 at the buzzer to defeat the Wolverines - in Heroic fashion no less. 

    Darnell Hoskins Jr. was terrific, and hit 2 huge buzzer beaters (one to end each half) that catapulted the Cougars into the early lead, then gave them the final win, shocking the Wolverines.

    Now tonight both teams know exactly what is at stake, as it seems every year for the last 15 years that these two teams are playing for it all. 

   Dunbar is 7-1 in the City League Standings & if they win, will win the City League outright; If Thurgood (6-1) wins, they will control their own destiny, as they have one game left, and could win it outright as well. 

   

   The one factor that will be different in this game than before is the presence of Evan Claiborne.  

   Claiborne, the former Wolverine now Cougar, was the talk of the summer for the transfer he made from the State Semifinalist. 

   

   The 6'10 defensive stopper with range has played well since being inserted in the Cougars lineup, and watch for the emotions to fly in this game, which will be on a Championship level to say the least. 

      Dunbar has seemingly found its rhythm, and while it hasn't been a dominant year, the Wolverines have had a good one nonetheless, and it could be sweeter with a revenge win in the Cougardome to grab another City League title. 

 Who wins the epic matchup? 

Let's compare the two sides & matchups a little further: 

GUARD PLAY:  ADVANTAGE  -  Cougars 

    While Dunbar's Stormi Cook has had a breakout year, and Chris Jackson started fast, the Cougars get the nod as Hoskins Jr. has been so good, that he is the front runner for Player of the Year in the City League.

FORWARDS: Advantage -  Wolverines 

     While Thurgood has players to matchup with Wolverines, they have nobody on the level of Senior Wing Terrance Landers Jr, who, with a big game tonight,  could also make a serious claim for the City League Player of the Year. 

CENTERS: Advantage - Cougars

   While the Wolverines now play small ball, the Cougars now have the big presence in the paint in Claiborne,  and this is a huge advantage that the Wolverines had the luxury of for the past two years. 

  If the big men show up for Dunbar, it could propel them to a win. If not, could be a HUGE night for Claiborne. 

COACHING :  ADVANTAGE   - Even

 With some of the best coaching minds on the sidelines for each team, its safe to say that neither side will have a real advantage come tonight. 

   Coach Pete Pullen of Dunbar has been in this situation so many times, that him and his staff are used to it. Thurgood Coach Darnell Hoskins has also thrived in tough situations, and will be ready to lock wits with the Wolverines.

 when the season started, most people thought that this would be the matchup for the City League title. And right on cue, it hasn't let us down. 

Be prepared for one of the games of the year tonight in

& it will be a sellout, so get there early.

(2) "The Field" takes on Wayne Train tonight 

 With so many victories on this incredible run, the Warriors have hurt everybody's feelings who have been in the way.

  And in a way, they could thank the Wildcats for that.
 Springfield tapped Wayne a couple seasons ago, and since that tapping, the Warriors haven't looked back in the last two years.
  While everyone knows about the wildness that took place between the Warriors and Wildcats last year, the Wildcats did play the Warriors almost to a even tilt, and even gave the Wayne Train all they could handle in the OHSAA Regionals.

    But when the smoke settled, the Wayne Train is still on the tracks..and running over opponents in the process as they look to get into USA Top 10 (Ranked 11th) in the country.
   Which brings us to the match up tonight.

Wayne has been winning all type of ways.

    Springfield has lost a series of heartbreaking games, but still has had a solid season to date.

 Does the Wildcats have enough to pull off the upset that could change their season?

Let's look at the matchups:

GUARD PLAY: ADVANTAGE - Even

    Despite having Rodrick Caldwell, a BGSU signee, the Wildcats have Danny Davis, a super talented, athletic Guard who has D-1 coaches hoping for his services. Whole Wayne has more than Caldwell, the Wildcats do too.

FORWARDS: Advantage  - Wayne

While Springfield has size at the 3 and 4, the Wayne Train duo of Chazz George and Trey Landers is, quite possibly, the best in the state. Landers has been nothing short of dominant, and that was no more evident in the destroyal inside against Trotwood. The Warriors had their way the first time..Will it change this time?

CENTERS: Advantage - Wayne 

 While Springfield has a monster on the block, who, once started up, can't be stopped, the Warriors have a future All-american in L'Christian Smith.
 Smith has been phenomenal, especially in the last up games, and has helped taken the Warriors to the next level. And yes, he's only a sophomore.
  While Wayne has a slight advantage,  it could be taken away if the Field can get the big man working early.


COACHING : ADVANTAGE - Even

    While there is no doubt that Wayne Coach Travis Trice Sr, is the man, the top HS Hoop coach right now in Southwest Ohio, the Wildcats have a great mind as well in Coach Isiah Carson.

 While Carson hasn't been able to win the big one, he still has done a good job of having the team ready to play. And make no mistake,  they will be ready to play tonight.
  Can he push the right buttons to pull off the upset?

No matter what the records are, this game will be as intense as a Regular season game can be.

Big Winners of Flyin to the Hoop; what Celebrities were there? Wayne stays unbeaten

Here's the recap, highlights and stars of last MLK weekend as the Top National HS Tourney Flyin' To The Hoop went down in the Miami Valley:

Flyin' to the Hoop Headlines:

(1) Wayne defeats IMG,  continue its torrid winning streak as "Father vs Son" game goes down; Trice Family Steals scene with Kenny Smith  

   When it was posted that Wayne would play IMG, Coach Travis Trice knew this would be a special one. His son D'Mitrik, who had led his Wayne team to their 1st ever State hoops title, would be on the court.
  Only this time, dad would be trying to stop his son from defeating his Warriors squad.
  The Warriors did prevail, but it was the theatrics of the Trices and the Jet which provided the entertainment...

Such as:
   Mrs. Trice clownin wit former NBA Champion and TNT analyst Kenny "The Jet" Smith;
  The duel within the duel as the Trice family as  talk ensued in between plays between father and son.

   While Trice admitted he was happy with the win, he wasn't as thrilled with having to stop his son, and Kenny Smith's son as well, en route to the win.

   The Warriors dominated - again- on the big stage as they cruised past IMG.

 Super Soph  L'Christian "Blue" Smith led Wayne with 15.
 D'Mitrik Trice had 2 points and 3 assists  and Smith had 8 as the Warriors stymied IMG offensively.


(2) Top recruit Josh Jackson shines but loses; then gets redemption with GW shot

One of the prized recruits in the country brought his talent here and ended with a bang as Jackson dropped 32 in the first game, then came back in the next game and hit a game winning three-point shot.
    Jackson, 6'6, plays for Prolific prep out of California & is widely considered the top unsigned recruit in the country, with Kansas & Michigan St at the top of his short list.

    After a couple of games, you could see why as the Super-talented Jackson dominated and was the most coveted player in the country.

     Other moments, it seemed he pressed a little, but when you're a top recruit, you will press those buttons sometime.
Overall, 47 points and a Game Winning buzzer beater to finish?
Not too bad for a #1 recruit.


(3) Rising star Seth Towns dominates

It seems that Mr. Towns is taking the snub from McDonald's All-America game quite seriously as he came in and poured a tournament high 40 points and 10 rebounds as Northland earned a victory.            The versatile 6'8 Towns was utterly unstoppable, and showed why Harvard will be getting not only a top-notch future NBA player but a unbelievably smart student.
    Ohio State seemingly let the Columbus native get away, after not really pursuing him to the degree that they should have.
   Towns hasn't taken it personal from most accounts, but his play shows otherwise, and has been running through competition like few others have this season.
 No doubt he's a McDonald's All-American, whether he got the nod or not.
He's that good.




 (4) Trotwood smacks Fairmont on opening night

 Trotwood continued to play winning basketball as they dumped on Fairmont in the flying to the hoop opener opening night.
 Trotwood had just beat Dunbar, and although they started slow, they shut the door on Fairmont by the 3rd quarter.  The more confidence they get, the more they will be a force to be reckoned with.
   Patten led the Rams with 29.



(5) Lima Sr. defeats Thurgood, 

Lima Sr. continued it's winning ways in Dayton as they defeated Thurgood 83-66.
   Michigan recruit Xavier Simpson (20) & Marquavious Wilson (19) led the #2 ranked Spartans to the win.

   Darnell Hoskins Jr. dropped almost half of his teams points (31), but it was not enough as the Spartans played another tough, dominant  performance which has kept them undefeated (10-0) put them right in the talk for a D-1 State Championship.



(6) Northridge drubs Yellow Springs

 Northridge routed Yellow Springs, and send a message to anybody who believe that they were a one-year wonder.
Yellow Springs never had a chance, and Northridge was led by Malik Akbar who had 31.

(7) Dunbar rally falls short,  loses late

The Wolverines came out slow, and fell to Gahanna Lincoln by a score of 67 - 62.  Gahanna was able to get out to a double-digit lead by halftime. Dunbar cut the lead to under 5 in the 4th, but Gahanna's big man Nick Ward (Mich St commit) was able to diffuse the rally - he dominated inside all night, and the Wolverines had no match for him.  was the Wolverines had no match. Terrance Landers Jr. led the Wolverines with 23.


"The Jet", "Izzo" & "Huggy Bear" invade Flyin'


 when you have names such as "The Jet, Izzo, and Huggy Bear coming through your event?

You know you doing good.

   Kenny Smith (TNT analyst), coach Tom Izzo of Michigan State, Archie Miller of UD, and Bob Huggins of West Virginia were just a few of the A-List name celebrity sports figures on hand at Flyin to the Hoop.
 At one point Izzo barked at Flyin' director Eric Horstman,
"How is this event not on TV?"....
meaning why hasn't ESPN picked it up yet?

Usually when a guy the stature of Tom Izzo is saying something like that, look for something to happen in the near future.
Just a testament to how far Flyin' has come.

Kenny "The Jet" Smith praises Dayton Hoops

   And in the words of Kenny Smith, "Shoutout to the Dayton area & Flyin' to the Hoop" is all we need.

Hey we been preaching it for decades. Now the whole country is seeing it for themselves.

Dayton is "The Hotbed for Hoops".

Plain and simple.

And by the way, all 42 teams who participated have said they wanted to come back - already.

3 Big Matchups "On A Tuesday?....Snow cancellations...Coach faces former Team

 Here's some of the key match-ups on the first snow day of 2016.

   

Can Rams get a big W at Dunbar?

 Trotwood (10-1)  @  Dunbar  (7-4)   

   

    Can Trotwood continue its torrid pace and defeat the Wolverines in their home? They have been dominant in this early season, but winning in the Wolverines gym is no easy task, even for the best of teams.

  This game could be a classic, as 2 of the premiere HS Sports programs in the state will battle it out. 

  

"HYPE FACTOR":  5 out of 5 

Meadowdale (10-4)   @ Wayne (11-0)  

   

     The Lions have been rolling,  and have had a very good season to date...Now they will be tested on all levels as they take on the Reigning big school State champs. 

  Wayne has dominated nearly every opponent this season, and they have been tested from jump. Not to mention they continue to break records, win awards, and swagg it out in the process.

  
    Meadowdale has the talent to match up with Wayne; Coach Dwayne Chastain and staff have done an excellent job of preparing the team, and keeping them motivated. 

     But can they match the intensity, skill level, excellent coaching and show the composure of playing the best team in the state?

   

"HYPE FACTOR":  5 out of 5 

C-J   (10-2)      @   Thurgood  (5-7)  

    In a game that features a coach pitting himself against his former school (Coach Darnell Hoskins) as the Eagles will take on the Cougars.

  

    Hoskins was a star guard at C-J, leading the Eagles to a State berth and eventually garnered a scholarship to play for Wisconsin & UD before playing pro ball. He's considered one of the greatest players to come out of C-J.

  

    Thurgood has been up and down this season, but lately they have started to hit on all cylinders, and boast a 4-1 record in the much respected Dayton City League.  

 Getting big man Evan Clayborne back will be key for the Cougars.

  

  The Eagles lost a heartbreaker to Alter last Friday, but have been dominant for the most part this season. 

 Chaminade are reached the State Semis last year, and have a team who could make another run this year.

Thurgood wins on Hoskins Jr buzzer beaters; Meadowdale smacks Stivers; Ponitz rallies

  Here's a recap of last night's city league games:

HOSKINS JR. buzzer beater stuns DUNBAR 

    When the Dunbar Wolverines and the Thurgood Marshall Cougars lace em up for basketball action, you can throw the records out the window.

It's gonna be a all out war to the finish.

It's become a rivalry that is "Unrivaled" in the Miami Valley when it comes to the best rivalries in High School Hoops.
  So when it came down to the last minutes of the game,  it was no surprise that the game hung in the balance.
  Last season? It was A.J. Harris making the plays for Dunbar. This season?

 Darnell Hoskins Jr.

    D-1 commit Hoskins Jr.  hit a acrobatic off balance, fading 3 ball (with 2 defenders running at him, no less) off the backboard as time expired -  & the Cougars defeated the Wolverines in epic fashion 51-49 in front of a sold out crowd @ Dunbar HS.
 
    It was his 22nd point of the game, and he was - in one word - brilliant.

     Before the 1st half, Hoskins had hit a near half court 3-pointer (that banked in) & he swagged himself and his squad to the locker room with a 28-26 lead.

     Despite not having the twin towers yet (Claiborne & Daniels) the Cougars hit the boards hard, pressured the Wolverines relentlessly and made it hard for the State Runner-Ups to get into a flow.

     Thurgood held a 8-point lead in the 4th, when Dunbar started to make their run. After a series of free throws, Terrance Landers Jr. hit a huge basket to put the Wolverines up for the 1st time in the half with 11 seconds remaining.
 The Dunbar crowd was going beserk. They felt another W, which has been the standard, despite the close games of late between the two teams.

  Enter Star PG Hoskins Jr.

  Hoskins Jr, who hit key shots all game, was denied the pass and initial shot. However the ball caromed off the front rim and, in a twisted moment of fate, landed in his hands.
   In front of the Cougars bench, Hoskins grabbed the ball, and launched a teardrop off the backboard which brung pandemonium to the crowd.

 Dunbar team and fans?
 Stunned.

Cougar Nation?
  Going absolutely nuts.

  When asked after the game about "The Shot " Hoskins Jr said:

 "I felt like it was our time; were tired of losing to Dunbar. I felt calm and was confident we could get the win."
 
Cougars (3-6) Coach Darnell Hoskins knows this could catapult them to bigger things.
  Dunbar (5-3) was led by Landers Jr, who had 15 points.
Thurgood currently sits atop the City League at 3-1, while Dunbar falls to 2-1 in City League play.




MEADOWDALE  cruises by STIVERS

Meadowdale got their 6th win in 7 games as they defeated Stivers 63-44.
    The Lions bounced back after losing to Toldeo Scott on Monday. The Lions got balanced scoring and now sit at 7-4 (overall) halfway through the season.
   
  Dynamic combo guard Kameron Suber led the Lions with 17 and Joe Keeble added 13.
      Stivers were led by star F Isiah Williams. The Tigers looked a little sluggish after playing back to back games, & too many turnovers and missed shots led to.their undoing. The Lions looked hungry after a tough loss to Toledo.

Meadowdale now moves at 3-1 in the City League, while Stivers falls to 1-2.




PONITZ wins 3rd straight, rallies for win

 Ponitz turned a 10-point halftime deficit into a 15-
point blowout win as the Panthers roared back on the road to defeat Oakwood 61-46.
  The young Panthers came out slow, which could be to their inexperience, but after the Panthers found their rhythm?
  Game over.
 The full court pressure was too much for the Lumberjacks.
  Junior stud De'Edgar Cooks had his season high of 22 to lead the Panthers (4-2) to victory.
 
   Ponitz coach Dwayne Hansbro has done a great job of teaching his young team in his 1st season as a Head Coach.
