Week 6 Big Games; Dunbar takes on Detroit powerhouse; GWOC showdown; City League Showdown; Stars of Week 5

Heres the top 5 Games in Week 6 as we hit the 2nd part of the regular season in High School football

(1)  Centerville  (5-0)     @   Wayne (4-1)
No question, as this will be one of the best games in the GWOC this season. With Elks coach Brent Ullery riding the wave, Centerville will be tested by the Wayne Train as the Warriors have won 4 straight.
Both teams have real playoff expectations, with the real question being, can the Elks continue to show they are better than what people expect? Or will Wayne expose the Elks for the first time this season?
This game also has ties to teen suicide campaign, as L'Christian Blue Smith was featured in a Teen Against Suicide campaign, in which a portion of the proceeds of tonights game will go to a foundation supporting teens against cancer.

(2)  Miamisburg  (3-2)   @  Fairmont  (4-1)

 In what is shaping up as a pre playoff game, can Miamisburg get back on track against a Firebirds team who was shut down last week against Beavercreek? Or will Fairmont dust off the lackluster offensive effort last week and push back into the playoff run?
 The loser of this game could see its playoff hopes dashed.

(3) Ponitz  (2-3)       @   Thurgood (2-3) 
In the City League Game of the Week, which team will show the most desire to get it done after both teams enjoyed great offensive outputs last week? Ponitz has won last 2 games, and has found a real rhythm on offense. Thurgood amassed 40+ points last week and has found a nice offensive rhythm the last 3 games.

(4)  Dunbar  (4-1)    @ Detroit Central Catholic

Can the Wolverines take on one of Detroits most prestigious schools as they face a strong Central Catholic team? The Wolverines have shown a lot of improvement since game 1, and they know if they can go up to Detroit and rep well, it could be a prelude for a big run later in the season.

(5) Beavercreek  (5-0)   @  Springboro (2-3)

Can the Beavers escape the trap game at a frustrated Springboro team? The Beavers stymied Fairmont last week with a great running game and a stout D that has the Beavers on the move towards the playoffs. But the schedule toughens, and despite Springboro's record, they are still a big threat to knock off Beavercreek.

(6) Belmont  (5-0)  vs  Cincy Hughes (Welcome Stadium, Saturday)  

Can the Bison continue to throttle opponents like they have all season? Hughes will come into Welcome and grab a monumental win? Or will Belmont continue to hold opponents without a TD?

District Finals Tonight at UD Arena; Weekend Recap: Trotwood cruises; Dunbar rallies; Ponitz falls; Northmont pushes on; Stars of the Weekend

Here the recap on Saturday and Sunday games in Southwest Ohio in the Miami Valley:

Star Player Devon Baker led Wolverines with 29 in win vs.  C-J

Dunbar rallies, outlasts C-J 
 In a emotional roller coaster of a game, Dunbar used a gritty 4th quarter and some clutch play to rally past C-J and win the Sectional.

  Early in the game, Dunbar dictated the flow, and held a lead in the first half. But Eagles star G Christian Montague  got going, and once he did? The entire Eagles offense followed suit as they went on a 26-10 and took a commanding lead (56-49) into the 4th off a half court shot by P'Hariz Watkins.

Dunbar then used the 4th quarter, at full strength, to battle back, then a Chris Jackson bomb gave the Wolverines a lead late in the 4th they would never relinquish.

Star G Devon Baker led the Wolverines with 29 as he clearly was the dominant player on the court.

C-J P'Hariz Watkins takes on Dunbar Devon Baker in Sectional Final

Trotwood handles business, stops Valley View
 The Rams jumped out on Valley View and never looked back as they shut down the Spartans to single digits in the 1st 2 quarters of the game to roll to a 83-40 win. While the game wasn't flashy, it was all substance for the #1 State Ranked Rams as they won the Sectional Final at UD Arena.

 The Rams were led by Sophomore Star G Amari Davis, (20pts) who has vowed to do work this season at the Arena after his tough ending last season. Also big man Justin Stephens did damage on the defense, with 4 big blocks, and holding down the paint, shutting down the Spartans interior plans.
 The Rams stifling D was the main reason for the lopsided score.
Up next? Urbana for the District Final tonight.



Northmont wins Sectionals, stops Boro'
Northmont continued it's great play with a emphatic win over Sprinboro.
The inside outside duo of Vinson Walker & Christian Wilson was too much for the Boro to handle as the Bolts won 63-50. Wilson had 18 to lead the troops, while Walker dropped a double double (12 pts, 17reb) to help the cause.
 With the win it puts the Bolts in position to win a District title this week.
While they won't be the favorite,  it does show that  
they have came a long way this season, and they are not a fluke. With all the tools to make a state run, can Northmont continue to roll in the District Finals?

Carroll squeaks past Ponitz  
Ponitz had a chance late in the game to grab the victory, but a couple tough plays and a Star performance by F Stafford Stevens (25pts, 7 rbs) moved the Patriots over the Panthers 45-43.

    In a game that featured great defense, timely FT  shooting, and a lot of drama, Carroll defeated another City league opponent for a Sectional Title in back to back years.

  While the game was tight late, the Patriots experience and a couple key plays was the difference.
 Carroll didn't make a 3-ptr in the entire game, but they hit 19 FTs, which helped them tremendously; they will take on Taft tonight;
  The Panthers coaching staff was upset about the loss, but knows they had a good first season.

Ponitz big man Eric Sealey Jr. led the Panthers with his gritty play, similar to a Dennis Rodman style presence that Coach Pittman had talked about.

The 6-3 junior F had a season high 16 rebounds; but it was his defense, his intensity and leadership which kept Ponitz in the game in the 1st half when shots weren't falling. Ponitz only scored 14 points in the 1st half.



Taft defeats Hughes  
Cincy Taft delivered a huge w with a gutty performance over top seeded Hughes. Hughes has had a very good season, beating Taft twice;
But Taft showed why they could be a force to be reckoned with as they fought, grabbed a late lead, and was able to hold on for a Sectional Title.

Wyoming stops Woodward in 2 OTs
 Top seeded Cincy Wyoming was able to overcome 2 OTs in order to put down Woodward.
While it looked like Woodward was about to stun Wyomng, they were able to force OT, and outlast Woodward.
Wyoming will now travel to UD Arena to face Dunbar tonight.



Brookville continues to roll 
 Brookville garnered another Sectional title with a easy win last week.
 Can they grab another District title this week?
With a good coaching staff and a couple stars on display, could Brookville reach the Regionals? They will have to defeat #1 seed Summit County Day.

District Finals 

5:30    Trotwood  vs  Urbana    
Can Urbana continue its great run? Or will they be overwhelmed by the highest scoring & scariest team in the OHSAA Tournament?
Trotwood is averaging 104 points a game. Can Urbana match that offensive firepower, or shift the game in their favor?


7:30    Carroll   vs  Cincy  Taft 
Can Carroll continue to play their way, led by Star F Stafford Stevens? Or will talented and well coached Taft win the District Finals again in UD Arena just like last year?
In a game that will feature 2 different styles, who will win the huge matchup?


9:30    Dunbar   vs  Cincy Wyoming 
 Can Dunbar knock off the #1 seed in the bracket?  They will have the home game, but Wyoming is up for the challenge, as they were tested in the last game, a 2 OT thriller over Woodward. Dunbar is playing at a very high level. With both teams having great talent, should be a heck of a game.

Amari Davis, Trotwood  - Davis dropped 20 to lead Rams to easy W, and added a vicious dunk to match

Keegan Saben, Centerville  - Saben was unstoppable in halting Wayne Train; inside, outside, and at the line for a game high 25 points

Mike McKay,  Springfield  -McKays big basket helped lead the Wildcats over Xenia and a Sectional title

Devon Baker, Dunbar  - Baker clutch play and 29 points help propel the Wolverines

Stafford Stevens, Carroll  - Stevens grinded his way to a tough 27 & 7 and a Sectional win

Christian Wilson, Northmont  - Wilson led the Bolts with 18 in a Sectional win

Vinson Walker, Northmont  - Walker worked hard for 17 monstrous boards to go with 12 points in a huge double double performance to help lead Northmont to a win

Christian  Montague, C-J  In a loss, Montague was spectacular against State Ranked Dunbar,  dropping 27 & 6 reb

Chris Jackson, Dunbar  -The clutch sharpshooter delivered when it counted hitting the go ahead 3, and added 17 & 7 Reb to get Dunbar the Sectional title

Milton Gage, C-J  - Gage was downright nasty as well, pouring in 23 on a variety of moves in a loss

Justin Stephens, Trotwood  - The big man completely dominated the paint against Valley View, with 4 blocks

Eric Sealey Jr, Ponitz - Sealey, who could be the next great rebounder who is unknown, hauled in 16 boards, played shutdown defense, and kept the Panthers in the game

Friday Recap: Springfield survives in OT; Wayne falls to Elks; Huge Games Today

Heres the recap on the Sectional games from Friday night.

Springfield wakes up in time to squeak past Xenia in OT
Heading into the fourth quarter, the Xenia Bucs had played a nearly flawless game, and seemed headed to a huge upset of the #1 seed.
Until the Springfield Wildcats unleashed a late flurry starting early in the 4th to send it into OT, then outlasted Xenia to win and move on to the District finals by a score of 73-72.
 Led by Leonard Taylor, Danny Davis and Mike McKay, the Wildcats will head to the finals for the first time in 4 years. They will face the winner of the #3 Oak Hills vs #12 Wilmington matchup.

Coach Carson and the Cats fans were very relieved after it looked as if Springfield would be the first #1 seed to go down in the OHSAA Bracket.

Centerville knocks off Wayne
The Centerville Elks used hot shooting, patient offense, and a Senior leader in Keegan Saben to shut down Wayne 74-58 on Friday night.
Wayne hit the first bucket of the game, a 3-pointer, and after that, it seemed like a struggle to get the ball in the hoop, as they shot poorly from the perimeter. While Centerville seemed comfortable in the game plan, the Wayne Train couldn't get on track, aside from Star F L'Christian "Blue" Smith, as Smith hit 3 3-pointers to keep Wayne in the game.
Ultimately, it was too much Saben and the Elks.
Centerville had 4 guys in double figures, led by Sabens 25, and will move on to play either #6 Lakota East or #4 Mason.

Keegan Saben delivers in the clutch for Centerville 

Saben was unstoppable, using screens, the baseline, back door moves and his own dribble moves to get his game off. Sam Lash (14) and G Donnie Shelton (10, 6rbs, 5ass, 4 steals) helped in a overall team effort.

Blue Smith (15) and Deshawn Parker (10) led the Warriors in scoring.

D-1 NORTHMONT    vs  SPRINGBORO     @ Centerville (7:30)
 Can Northmont continue to play lights out like they have this season? Or will Springboro continue to find a way to win when it counts?
  This GWOC matchup could come down to the wire.



D-2 
#7 VALLEY VIEW    vs  #1 TROTWOOD   (5 pm)
Can Valley View compete with the best team in the State according to the OHSAA Final HS State Poll? While Valley View has had a good season, it will take a monumental effort to pull off the upset today as the Rams look to reach the District Finals. The Rams are averaging a whopping 115 points a game in the tournament.


#10 CARROLL        vs     #6  PONITZ    (6:30) 
In a game featuring a Carroll team who defeated Thurgood last season in this exact round, can they do it again against the higher seed? While Ponitz has been playing well, this Carroll team will be ready for the challenge. Former Flyer and current Ponitz head Coach Steve Pittman has had a very good first year. Can he grab a sectional title?



#5 CHAMINADE-JULIENNE      vs   #2 DUNBAR   (8pm)
In the game of the Day, can C-J and their dynamic backcourt somehow pull off the major upset of the Wolverines? Dunbar's offense has been nothing but high octane as they scored 100 in the last game. Can Chaminade play their game, slow the tempo down and keep the game in the 50's like they want it? Or will one of the Top teams in the State show that they are too much to handle?


CINCY Bracket
#2 HUGHES               vs         #3  TAFT 
Can Cincy Hughes get the big win over Taft?  While TAFT was a shot away from State last season, they will be hard pressed to stop Hughes and their marksmanship. Not to mention HUGHES winning the games this season as well. Can Taft find what it will take to pull off the big W?


#1 WYOMING            vs        #4 WOODWARD
Can WYOMING continue its great season? Or will perennial WOODWARD pull off the minor upset? Woodward has the pieces to do it, but Wyoming has been nearly unstoppable all season.

Key Games go down this weekend as Regular Season nears end

Here's the Top 5 Games of the Night as we hit the final weeks of the Regular Season:

Will the State Ranked Rams continue the great play @ Xenia? 

(1) Springfield (16-2) @ Wayne (14-6) (GWOC)

 Can the "Field continue its great season? At the expense of one of the very few down seasons at Wayne? With one of the stars (Blue Smith) not playing, can the Wayne Train survive the dynamic squad that the Wildcats boast, led by Wisconsin commit and Star G Danny Davis and F-C Leonard Taylor?
  The Wildcats will go into this game as a slight favorite, but can they pull off the huge task of beating Wayne in their gym? Davis and the crew haven't done that since he joined the varsity.

Best belive both coaches (Travis Trice - Wayne & Isiah Carson - Springfield) will have their respective teams ready for war tonight.



(2) Dunbar (16-3) @ Stivers (13-7)
 After a near loss against Rival Thurgood, how will the State Ranked Wolverines bounce back against a Stivers team playing it's best ball of the season? The Tigers sit in 2nd place in the city League and have been led by Tony Boddie and Paris Minnifield this season. It has a been a great coaching job by Felix Turner and the staff and they would love nothing more than to knock off the undefeated Wolverines in City League play.



(3) Springboro  @ Northmont (15-4)
 Can the Boro knock off one of the hottest teams in the Miami Valley?
 Northmont has played it's best ball down the stretch, enabling them to win their Division and to work for a nice seed in the tourney.
 Springboro has had a .500 season, and this will be no easy task, as Northmont has been lights out at home this season.


(4) Trotwood (17-2) @ Xenia
 Will Trotwood have a lapse against a solid Xenia team who has played well in the 2nd half of the season?
 The Rams are coming off a 98-89 win over Dunbar in one of the premiere match ups in the City.
Will they come out focused tonight vs a offensive minded Xenia team who can score with the best of em on a good night?


(5) Meadowdale @ Ponitz (13-6)
   Can the Panthers continue on a good season and tie for a 2 spot in the City League?  It's been a god season for the Panthers. Or will the Lions continue their solid play late in the season?

Could this year be special for GWOC Champs Northmont?

Dayton City League

Dunbar  survives Thurgood and Rivalry Game
 The Wolverines held off a game and scrappy Thurgood team in what was a 60-59 win. Thurgood had a couple chances to get the upset victory, but couldn't seal the deal and the upset. The Wolverines were forced into a slow pace game, didn't shoot well,  and Cougars Head Coach Shawn McCullough came up with a great game plan to hold down the Wolverines.

Not to mention Dunbar-Thurgood has been the premiere rivalry in Dayton Public for the last 20 years. So when that happens, all records go out the door. Dunbar moves to 17-3 on the season.

Stivers ends Meadowdale win streak, move to 2nd place

 The Tigers picked up after their first loss in 7 games with a win over Meadowdale 61-51. Both teams were playing good ball of late, as the Tigers had won 6 straight before a setback on Saturday. Meadowdale was on a 4 game winning streak, but  Tony Boddie was the key player, leading the Tigers to 2nd place in the City League with one game to go.

Belmont knocks off Ponitz

The Ponitz Panthers got a big City victory over Belmont, as they try to get ready for the tournament run. Ponitz, a week ago, felt like they had a outside shot at a city league title, but a couple of losses doomed that. Now Coach Steve Pittman and the Panthers crew are working towards a 2 spot in the city and a lengthy tourney run. Star F Floyd Scott led the Panthers. Belmont still is trying to find its rhythm this season, but could be a tough out come tourney time.

Miamisburg Eric Boykin knocks down some FTS

Miamisburg runs past West Carrollton

 Miamisburg used a fast start and outscored the Pirates in every quarter en route to a 61-34 win. Star players Kort Justice (18), Lathan Hartman (12 pts, 10 rbs, 8 ass) & Eric Boykin (12 pts, 3 steals) led the charge. Miamisburg moves to 9-9 on the season while West Carrollton falls to 0-19.

Northmont defeats Bethel 

 The Bolts used a huge 3rd quarter spurt to put away Bethel 77-63 Tuesday night. Fueled by Rodney Richardson (14pts 6assists), Vinson Walker (9-9 FG, 18pts 14 boards, 7 assists,) & Delonte Capers (12 pts, 4 reb, 2 assists) led the 28-11 burst in the 3rd to give the Bolts that cushion they needed to get the W. Northmont now rolls to 15-4.

Centerville squeaks past Taft

The Elks rode star G Keegan Saben and Sam Lash (15pts, 5 reb) to a 53-49 win vs Regional Finialist Cincy Taft. Centerville played their normal style and was able to get the close win, something they have done quite often this season. Centerville now moves to 11-7 on the season.

Can Star Player of Week 9 Paris Minnifield and the Stivers Tigers continue their wining streak?

Trotwood rolls past Northmont in GWOC Showdown

The Rams was able to shut down Northmont early in what was billed as the top 2 teams in the GWOC. The #1 State Ranked Rams seemed to play at another level, while Northmont struggled early in the game, sealing their fate as the Rams pushed out and was able to cruise, led by rising junior Myles Belyeu 26 points. Belyeu was a workhorse all night and showed why he will be one of the most coveted Seniors in the Country next year. The win moves Trotwood to 10-1


Dunbar stymies Toledo Scott on the road

The Wolverines went up to Toledo and shut down the hosts as star F Caleb McConnell racked up 28 to lead Dunbar to a 71-52 win for the state ranked Wolverines. The win moves Dunbar to 11-2.


Ponitz holds off Thurgood for 11th win 
 The Panthers were led by Star Senior Forward Scott and D'Edgar Cooks this weekend as they edged by Thurgood 51-50 and Clark Montessori. Cooks had 17 in the win vs Thurgood and Scott dropped 26 in the win against Clark. The w's put Ponitz at 11-4, 4-2 in the city and in position for a nice run in coach Steve Pittmans first season.

Alter smacks C-J in Rivalry Game
 Alter handed the Eagles a smackdown in a rivalry that has created tons of great players, coaches, and moments that rival any in the GCL.
However, in this one, it was all Alter all night as Dominic Lavarie dropped 25 to lead the Knights to a 71-50 win.

Sidney bounces back
 Sidney was able to bounce back with a win as Star G Isiah Gordon led the Yellow Jackets with 20 points.

Centerville garners another win
 Star Guard Keegan Saben led the Elks to another win, over Lebanon.

The "Field" winning streak snapped
Springfield handled business against Fairmont winning 70-64 but then lost at Cincy Moeller. Springfield is now 11-2 and sitting pretty in the GWOC atop the league.


Wayne blows out Middletown without star 
 The Warriors got back on track with a big win over Middletown 74-45 as star big man Blue Smith didn't play. Smith was held out due to a minor injury to his back on a play last week. Despite Smith not playing, Wayne was hitting on all cylinders, and was able to get back on track after a 4 game losing streak.

Minniefield leads Stivers to big win over Bowling Green
 Sharpshooter Paris Minniefield was unconscious against Bowling Green, as he led the Tigers to a big win 52-33. The 6'1 senior combo guard, Minniefield hit a flurry of 3's, dropped 25, and was able to lead the Tigers to a 9-6 record.

 With the prestigious Flyin' to the Hoop coming during the weekend, there could be some shuffling come next week when the rankings come out.

Team on the Rise: Northmont  - The Bolts seem to have a lot of confiedence after knocking off Wayne. Could be a scary team come March.

Team Under the Radar:   Springfield  - The Wildcats have been laying low as Northmont and Wayne have grabbed the headlines. But the murmurs is that this Springfield team could have a deep tourney run in store and have been on fire of late.

Here's the lowdown on Week 9 and what happened in some of the big games around the Miami Valley:

Dunbar RB Tavion Thomas powers Wolverines past Taft to playoff berth

Wayne stops Springfield - 
 Wayne once again showed that when the chips are down, they still are the premier team in the Miami Valley as they were able to win @ Springfield in a nationally televised game 38-14.
  Wayne Train star RB Fred Pitts dominated along with the O-Line, as he ran for 202 yards and 2 TDs, & the Warriors dominated in the trenches on both sides.

After the game, Wildcats coach Maurice Douglass admitted that Wayne had controlled the line of scrimmage. While he feels his squad is close, they were not quite to the level they needed to be to defeat Wayne in a national game. While he was pleased with the effort, he still hopes for his team to get better.
   Leading up to the game there was some twitter and social media beefing  in which the Cats and the Warriors went at it. At the end of the day, the twitter fingers took the field, and a game was played, and it was the Warriors who got the last laugh.

  Wayne now moves to 8-0-1 while Springfield falls to 6-3. The Wildcats, with a win, could still get into the OHSAA playoffs.  Wayne, ranked 2nd in the state, hopes to get a 1st round home playoff game.




 Dunbar exacts revenge, garners playoff berth

 Thurgood was able to handle Meadowdale in a huge city battle 34-7. Coach Brian Carter has led his troops to a 4-5 record as they head into last game. Star QB Darion Stroud led the Cougars to another big win, as the  Cougars have had their share of big Ws this season. Meadowdale falls to 3-6.

  Ponitz continues to set records this season, as the Panthers defeated Cincy Gamble Montessori this season. The Panthers were led by D'Edgar Cooks, who was unstoppable.
 Coach Jim Place has taken the Panthers and now have them at 6-3. If the Panthers weren't D-3,  they'd be playing for a playoff spot. They need some help, but there's still a outside chance they can get in.



Northmont upsets the "Boro"  
 Nothmont delivered a tough loss to Springboro as they rode star RB Devin Kenerly 4 TDS - 2 in the 4th quarter, as the Bolts won 32-20. Springboro was ahead 20-19 going into 4th, but Northmont took control for the win. Northmont moves to 4-5 while Springboro falls to 6-3, & now must win and get a little help to make playoffs.

 Trotwood smacked down Xenia 49-14  in a "Trap Game" for the Rams.
QB Markell Stephens Peppers led the way with 3 TDs, as the Rams now ready for a huge GWOC match-up with Wayne this week. The Rams have won 8 straight since Week 1 loss.



Miamisburg moves 1 win away from playoffs  
 Miamisburg continue its strong play with hey easy win over Beavercreek 28 - 7.  3 TD  runs by Clark & 100 yards running by Netherton basically sealed the deal as the O-Line dominated for the Burg. Miamisburg moves to 7-2 & in good playoff position.

  Lebanon basically secured a playoff berth as they ran over Stebbins 41-14. Star QB Dakota Allen  went ham on Stebbins with 5-TDs, as the Warriors moved to 7-2 on the season.

 Franklin continued it's dream season with a big time win over Oakwood 66-48. The Wildcats are 9-0 & will look to go undefeated and ready for a playoff berth.  Franklin star RB. Ryan Montgomery scored 5 times.

Here's the lowdown on Week 9 and what happened in some of the big games around the Miami Valley:

Wayne stops Springfield - 
 Wayne once again showed that when the chips are down, they still are the premier team in the Miami Valley as they were able to win @ Springfield in a nationally televised game 38-14.
  Wayne Train star RB Fred Pitts dominated along with the O-Line, as he ran for 202 yards and 2 TDs, & the Warriors dominated in the trenches on both sides.

After the game, Wildcats coach Maurice Douglass admitted that Wayne had controlled the line of scrimmage. While he feels his squad is close, they were not quite to the level they needed to be to defeat Wayne in a national game. While he was pleased with the effort, he still hopes for his team to get better.
   Leading up to the game there was some twitter and social media beefing  in which the Cats and the Warriors went at it. At the end of the day, the twitter fingers took the field, and a game was played, and it was the Warriors who got the last laugh.

  Wayne now moves to 8-0-1 while Springfield falls to 6-3. The Wildcats, with a win, could still get into the OHSAA playoffs.  Wayne, ranked 2nd in the state, hopes to get a 1st round home playoff game.

Here's the recap on what happened in Week 7 of HS sports in the Miami Valley:

(1) The "Boro" shocks the "Burg" - 
Springboro scored with 2 seconds left in the game, and in dramatic fashion, scored on a 2-point conversion to defeat Miamisburg 39-38. The win puts Springboro at 5-2 & drops Miamisburg to 5-2. Both are in position to make the playoffs.

(2) Ponitz ruins Meadowdale homecoming, blanks Lions - Ponitz  handled  business and shut out Meadowdale 31-0  @ Welcome Stadium Friday night. It was the Lions homecoming,  but it was all Ponitz all night as they run their record to 4-3 while Meadowdale falls to 2-5. Pointz star RB Jamil Freeman led the way for the Panthers.

(3) "Blue" Smith shines vs Beavercreek  - Star WR L'Christian  "Blue" Smith scored on 2 long TDS early in the game and Wayne cruised past Beavercreek 44-0. Wayne now rolls to 6-0-1 while Beavercreek falls to 3-4. Once Smith entered the zone, there was no turning back for the Warriors.


(4) Dunbar wins big on the road - Dunbar got a much needed road victory in Cincy as they defeated Cincy Western Hills 50-8. Tavion Thomas led the attack with another great game (100+ rushing, 2 TDs), and the defense, led by star LB Antwuan Johnson's Interception.

Star LB Antwuan Johnson is the unquestioned leader of a stingy Wolverines D unit.

Dunbar is now 6-1 on the season, their best record in over 20 years. Dunbar will face Thurgood in a big rivalry game this week.


(5) C-J wins 4th in 5 games - Chaminade continues its hot play with a blowout win over Roger Bacon. The Eagles are now 4-3 on the season, their first time over .500 after starting slow.

(6) Springfield win huge road game @ Northmont
 The Wildcats  held off a pesky Bolts team, in which Northmont scored 23 straight points but still lost 35-29.  Springfield now moves to 5-2, while Northmont falls to 3-4.

(7) Trotwood rolls again for 6th straight - 
The Rams won their 6th straight game as they ran past Fairborn 49-6. The Rams have won their 6th straight and are definitely hitting a playoff stride as we get close to the playoffs. Star RB Raveion Hargrove and that vaunted Rams D led the way.


(8) Thurgood  shuts out Hughes -
 Thurgood went to Cincy and garnered their 3rd win of the season as they blanked Cincy Hughes 40-0.  The win puts Thurgood at 2-1 in the SWOPL. They have a huge match-up this week vs Dunbar. The Cougars have won 3 of their last 5 games and have played well recently.

Dunbar streaks past Ponitz in 2nd half; Put 56 on the board

For about 20 solid minutes or for most of the 1st half, Ponitz went toe for toe, and actually had the lead vs Dunbar, much like last year;

    The Panthers showed they had the gameplan to play with the favored Wolverines. Star RB Jamil Freeman was doing work, & after a strong TD run by Ponitz late in the 2nd quarter, it looked as if we might have a upset on our hands, as the Panthers led 14-12.  The Panthers crowd was hype, and the sense of a Ponitz win was starting to look like a reality.

After that, Dunbar outscored Ponitz 44-21 in a blistering display of offense as they routed Ponitz 56-35.

With City League legend Keith Byars watching the game, the Wolverines took it up a few notches.

  Jo Jo Scates, Keyshawn Jones & Tavion Thomas all scored, as the Wolverines put it all together in the 2nd half as Michigan committ Antwan Johnson led the Defense to some key stops early in the 3rd to take the game from a nail biter to a rout.

Dunbar moves to 2-0 while Ponitz  falls to 1-1.

Big Time Matchup on A Thursday; Ponitz, Dunbar Intriguing Week 2 Matchup

 After the Ponitz Panthers dismantled its first opponent, this weeks Panthers vs Dunbar Wolverines Week 2 matchup looks a lot better as they will battle tonight @ Welcome Stadium (7pm)

Add the fact that the Wolverines was able to pull out the comeback victory, and now you have two teams who could be playing for a lot more than just a 2-0 record early in the season, as the Panthers take on the Wolverines at Welcome Stadium.

    Now while Dunbar was figured to be a favor for playoff contender, ponitz was looked at possibly being a year away.

    However with the great coaching staff and the seniors stepping up, we could be in for a heck of a game.


Keys to victory for Ponitz

Ponitz must set the tempo in the game...The Panthers was able to dictate the tempo in the first game with their misdirection offense and big play ability.....They need to be able to set the tone against a team that they haven't had success with....Must get the running game going.....Must get pressure with D Line & win line of scrimmage....Have to stop big play ability of Wolverines.


Keys to victory for Dunbar: 

Dunbar must execute the little things early and often....They have to get their key offensive players in the game....Must play good defense like in Week 1..... Have to get passing game going.....Must win key "big play" total vs Ponitz.

WIld Week 1 as games postponed; Wolverines win shootout; Belmont falls after delay; Wayne game undecided as team refuses to play

In what could be the start to a wild year in high school football, the kickoff on the season openers for  Friday night was beautiful.
Then about a hour later the thunder, lighting and rain halted most of the games in the Miami Valley.

Heres some of the top headlines and results from the City League, GWOC, and other teams after the weekend:

Dunbar wins shootout vs Withrow 

Dunbar wins thriller after slow start 36-30

   The Wolverines, despite having been good, know that they have the talent to be great.
This year.
But after the first quarter, Cincinnati Withrow showed that maybe the Dunbar train was all hype.
Withrow was in control, had shut down Dunbar star players, and held a 14-2 lead in the 2nd quarter.

Then the Wolverines and their star players got going.

Dunbar big horse of a RB in Tavion Thomas and star WR Jo Jo Scates both scored TD's, and outscored Withrow 34-14 the rest of the way to win a great game 36-30 @ Welcome Stadium.
Dunbar's defense played well, despite some tough conditions early, as the Wolverines started slowly.

In a blazing hot game (95 degrees) which featured a fake punt for a  TD, a fumble recovery for a TD, a safety, to go along with another delay of the rain and thunder again - but nevertheless the Wolverines were able to get a big win, which is a huge morale boost, since they lost a lot of those type of games last year.



Belmont falls after restart as Hamilton Twp. regroups to win

 Belmont was firing on all cylinders on Friday night, and had state ranked Hamilton Township on the ropes.
The Bison was up 16-6 before the delay. The offense was clicking,  and the defense and fans were all in as the SWOPL Champs were looking good.
Then the rain came, and the game was delayed until the next morning.

When Hamilton came back that next morning, it was clear they made some adjustments, as they defeated Belmont 41-24 @ Welcome Stadium.

 The Bison seemed a step slow that morning, and once Hamilton got it rolling, it was no stopping the offense. Belmont scored to cut the lead to 34-24 and was driving before a fumble on a questionable call led to a runback for another TD.
  When asked about the game, Coach White felt that his boys made too many mistakes and didn't quite match the intensity of Hamilton, leading to the loss.

Wayne game postponed after PA squad declines to play 

One of the top ranked teams in Pennsylvania decided that they would not finish the game at Wayne, as some of their top players would not be able to come back on a Saturday, causing a little bit of a rift.

   Archbishop Wood, a perennial title contender in one of the biggest divisions in all of Pennsylvania, decided that because of the lighting and rain delay which stopped the game & pushed it to the next day, that they won't finish the game.

Wayne had just tied the game up at 24, before the game was called.
 The Warriors have argued that because they decided they didn't want to finish it they should be declared the winner.
  However, in a game like this, featuring 2 of the best in their respective states, the travel plans has to be considered.
  Both teams are awaiting on a decision.




Meadowdale, Thurgood both fall on road

Meadowdale lost on the road as Piqua was hitting on all cylinders for a 48-0 win. In talking with star RB Darien Tipps -Clemons before the season, he felt excited about Piqua's opportunity this year and with Shrubb leading the way with 3 TDs, it was all Piqua.


Thurgood falls to tough Shawnee team

    Springfield Shawnee, one of the tough teams in D-3, was able to stop Thurgood 31-6. Shawnee ruined the Coaching Debut of Thurgood head coach Brian Carter.



Troy defeats Trotwood in defensive battle 

With all the talk about Ravieon "Shock" Hargrove, the Trojans focused on Hargrove and was able to stop the Rams 10-6 on Saturday.
 Hargrove still scored the Rams only TD, on Friday night, but when Troy came out Saturday, they put together a TD drive which salvaged a huge win for the Trojans, who haven't been good for a few years now.
 Hargrove saw boxes of 8 and 9 guys all day,and the Rams passing game couldn't come through.



Springfield defeats Dublin Coffman  

Springfield was able to hold off a very tough Dublin Coffman for a 22-20 win. That win could propel the Wildcats to a very good season.



Miamisburg, C-J debut new stadiums; 

Miamisburg & CJ  both unveiled their new beautiful stadiums in Week 1.
Miamisburg shut out West Carrollton 44-0 while C-J lost 34-14 to Marion Local.



Alter defeats Fairmont  
Alter continued it's dominance of its season openers vs it's neighbor Fairmont, as they came back after a 8-0 deficit & game (Delay) & defeated Fairmont 22-8.

Heres our rankings for the City League HS Football teams and how they will end up in the Southwest Ohio Public League:

Is this the year the Wolverines win the SWOPL?

Dunbar Wolverines  - With 3 of the top offensive players (Keyshawn Johnson, JoJo Scates, & Jeffrey Wagner) in Southwest Ohio, and a defense with some experience, the Wolverines seem ready to make the jump into the upper echelon. With a experienced coaching staff, now is the time for the Wolverines. Despite losing big time players WR Terrance Landers and DL Jeffrey Pooler, Dunbar still is loaded and should make some playoff noise this season, not to mention in contention for the overall SWOPL title. Coach Darren Powell knows that the team must stay focused to get to the next level. They've been no less than 5-5 for the last 10 years.

Prediction (8-2) -  Playoff Bound



(2) Belmont Bison  - After the epic season Belmont had, what can they do for an encore?  Coach Earl White continues to move mountains, after taking a moribound sports program and injecting life into it. And the season could have been even better if injuries hadn't occurred in the 1st round playoff game. Despite losing All- Everything RB Davion Lankford, the Bison have a wealth of talent coming in, led by RB Elijah Malcolm and Safety Dawson Martin. Bison should be in thick of SWOPL Championship race this season as well.

Prediction  (7-3)  - Playoff Race

(3) Ponitz Panthers  -  With a bevy of seniors this season looking to make a move, this could be the season of a possible breakout with Coach Place at the helm in his 3rd season. If they can get some consistency from the QB spot in Xavier Henry, it will be a good year for the Panthers. Led by Senior Isaiah Gordon & star RB Jamil Freeman, the Panthers will look to make some waves this year in the SWOPL.

 Prediction (5-5) Compete for SWOPL Division



(4) Thurgood Marshall Cougars   - With a new coach (Brian Carter), look for the Cougars to have a new outlook for the 2016-17 season. After running the City League for 6 consecutive years, Belmont won the league last season, and Thurgood took a couple lumps in the process. But this season, with a talented QB Darion Stroud leading the way and All-State selection DB Thomas Richardson holding up the defense. There is optimism still for the Cougars who have talent across the board.

Prediction (5-5)



(5) Meadowdale Lions - The Lions have a possible star in QB Cameron Redd, who will look to lead the Lions back into prominence. Coach John Wortham is excited about the team this year, but knows he has to replace a do everything player in City League player of the year  CJ Williams. Look for the Lions to battle as they will be well coached, that's for sure. And with Defensive stalwart Dennis Locklin ready to assume a leader role, can the Lions get back to the playoffs?
Prediction (5-5)

"Rematch" set as Dunbar steamrolls Eaton, Trotwood eases past Ponitz

When Dunbar skipped going to the "3rd Bracket" it stunned the coaches, and the committee of experts, who thought that the Wolverines would take the top seed in that bracket, and meet the powerhouses later.

Toughest sectional in Southwest Ohio?

Instead, the Wolverines opted for the bracket with Trotwood.

Well, on Saturday night at the Nutter Center, the "Rematch" is in effect as both teams handled business in round 2.

   Dunbar and Trotwood now bring us the first "BigTime" tourney match up of the OHSAA Bball Tournament Season.

     Dunbar throttled Eaton 94-59 in the early game as star Forward & Purdue University bound Terrance Landers Jr. dominated with 24.
 
     Eaton played tough in the 1st quarter (down 1) but the Wolverines press and offense overwhelmed Eaton, so much so that the 2nd and 3rd quarters  the Wolverines outscored Eaton 54-35.
 

  In the 2nd game, state ranked Trotwood stormed out early (up 29-16 after 1st qtr) and often, and Ponitz was no match for the Supremely talented Rams as they won 106-59.

 Myles Belyeu, the son of former Mami Redhawk standout Scott Belyeu, dropped 28 and was the best player on the court.

    Trotwood won every quarter, and looked every bit as dominant as they did in game 1. Their defense was stifling, and the Rams offense was hitting on all cylinders.
 
 Which brings us to the matchup on Saturday.

 In the last matchup, at Dunbar, Trotwood jumped out early,  set the tone,  and held off the Wolverines for a 10-point win.
 
    Freshman sensation Amari Davis was dominant, and the Rams seemed the more aggressive & confident team.
 
  When asked why Dunbar chose the bracket with Trotwood, their answer was this;
 
We felt like we didn't play our best game vs Trotwood, and we barely lost;
We feel confident that we will put our best up against their best on a bigger platform.

 Enough said.

HS Boys Tournament results; Trotwood, Wayne both drop 100, Ponitz upsets C-J, Dunbar cruises

Here are some of the Headlines and recap of what happened this last weekend in the 1st round of the OHSAA Bball tournament:

Wolverines guard Chris Jackson goes for 2 vs Massie

TROTWOOD  puts a 100 spot on ROSS
    Trotwood started off the OHSAA tourney with a bang, dropping a 100 spot on a overmatched Ross team. the Rams had 5 players in double figures led by All-GWOC Guard Torrey Patton who had 18.

THURGOOD smacks WAYNESVILLE
   The City League Champs handled business as they took out Waynesville 77-58. 
Thurgood was led by Evan Clayborne who had 17 & Jones who also had 17. 

CENTERVILLE  squeaks out win 

   The Elks won a tight game as Keegan Saben hit 12 huge points to lead the Elks to a 42-39 win. The score was 25-18 Centerville after 3 quarters when Fairmont made a run.

PONITZ upsets C-J 

    In one of the bigger upsets in the 1st round, Ponitz defeated State Semifinalist C-J to move on to the next round. 
Ponitz controlled the game, until the 4th, when the Eagles made a run to get back into it. Scott led the Panthers with 18. Ponitz led by 10 at half and played a strong game from start to finish. 
    Salute rookie head coach Dwayne Hansbro for his first OHSAA tournament win as a head coach.

DUNBAR cruises vs Massie
 The Wolverines came out firing and rolled to a easy 1st round win vs Massie. 
 Dunbar started the game on a 24-12 run, and never looked back, winning 87-52.
Terrance Landers Jr. led a balanced attack with 13. 


MEADOWDALE falls to OAKWOOD in final minute
  Meadowdale lost a heartbreaker to Oakwood as they couldn't seal the deal, lose late 48-47. 
  The game was tight all night long, and you knew it would be a fantastic finish. 
   The Lions had a couple chances, but couldn't finish the game. The Lions were led by J.Smith with 14. 
  

SPRINGFIELD claws past BUTLER
 The Wildcats easily handled Butler to move on to next round.


WAYNE drops 100 without star player
   Wayne had no trouble with West Carrolton, as they put up 101 against the Pirates. 
The Warriors didn't have star big man the Christian Blu Smith, as he sat out the game.



MIDDLETOWN survives Milford
  Middletown won it's 1st round opener vs Milford by a score of 38-35. 
 The game was close throughout,  but the Middies were able to make the key plays to push through.

  By the time the game was over, coach Darnell Hoskins and the Cougars was able to breathe a huge sigh of relief, as his Cougars escaped Belmont with a two-point win in overtime 52-50.

    From the jump Belmont was up in Thurgood and it was no doubt that they were going to have to fight to the end to get the win.
 

   Belmont had a two point lead in the final seconds of the game, when Darnell Hoskins Jr hit a beautiful spinning layup with 5 seconds left to push the game into overtime.
     Even in overtime, it looked as if the Bison would get it done. However, Thurgood grabbed a two-point lead, its first of the OT coming in the final moments of the game.
Belmont  missed their final attempt, and the rest was history.
The Cougar fans rejoiced, while Belmont was shocked in the defeat.
 
    Thurgood moves to 9-1 in the City, and 11-9 overall.
Belmont falls to 2-8.
But the optimism is real at Belmont, and within reason.



DUNBAR  wins in OT, survives TIGERS

      In a game that was similar to Belmont -Thurgood, Stivers stayed close all night,  and held a 6-point lead with less than 3 minutes to go, as it looked as if the Tigers would pull off the upset.

     Then the Wolverines kicked into gear, caused some turnovers, took advantage of Stivers misses at the line and pushed the game into OT.

    Both teams had a chance to win the game, but it headed to OT.

     In OT, Stivers still had a lead, but Dunbar got key baskets and at the end, Caleb McConnell caught a tipped pass from Stormi Cook and dished it to Devon Baker for a layup at the buzzer as the Wolverines won 72-70.
  The Tigers had numerous opportunities, but couldn't seal the deal.



 
MEADOWDALE knocks off PONITZ 

The Lions grabbed a 65- 53 victory over Ponitz as they roared late to get the win on Senior Night.
The game was close all night, and Ponitz held a 27-25 lead at half.
 The Lions regrouped in the 2nd half, and seemed to find their rhythm.
 So did Ponitz,  as it looked as if the Panthers Would Get Some "Getback" after losing earlier this season.
Not so fast Panthers.

Meadowdale finished on a 12-0 run to end the game, hence the final score.

  Jarvis Smith and Kameron Suber led the Lions with 14 a piece, while CJ Williams dropped 10.

    Meadowdale now moves to 6-4 in City League play, good for 3rd in the Rankings, and giving them confidence for the tourney.
  Ponitz was game all night and while Coach Hansbro, while disappointed ab out the result, like the fight his team had in em.


WAYNE  throttles FAIRMONT, now one game away

A little snow couldn't stop the WayneTrain from dismantling the Fairmont Firebirds 88-51.
 
    Initially the game was cancelled, but after reassessing the situation, feeling the weather wasnt too dire, the game was back on.

     Probably not good for the Fairmont squad,  as they were no match for the Top team in the state.
 Wayne will now play for a chance to go undefeated this weekend, and they prep for their State Championship defense.
