Boys Tourney (District & Sectional Finals): Meadowdale Rallies Late; Centerville Pounds Tecumseh; Fairmont, Alter, Wayne, Carroll, C-J Still Rollin

 After a wild week of District & Sectional Basketball, here are the top Headlines and Recap in the Boys Division of OHSAA Tournament 

DISTRICT FINALS RECAP:

D-1 - Dayton Boys Smack Cincinnati Schools as Centerville, Wayne and Fairmont all Advance.

The Dayton big schools saw how the  Cincinnati schools did the D-2 division (boys) and girls D-1 division and vowed to not be apart of that. 

And after a clean sweep of games, all won by GWOC schools nevertheless,  there will be 3 teams vying for that OHSAA D-1 Semifinal berth.

Centerville Destroys Opponent after 24-4 opening quarter.

The Centerville Elks put on a show in the final game of the night, as they easily defeated Lakota West at Fifth Third Arena. Tom House led the boys in scoring with 24 on the night to lead the Elks to their 3rd consecutive Regional Appearance and 47th straight win. The defending OHSAA D-1 champs will face Fairmont on Wednesday night.

Wayne Steamrolls Past Opp, Led By Rice, Mukes

The Wayne Warriors shook off the early season hate, used the under-the-radar approach and have played the best ball of the season lately to grab their first District title under the Martindale regime. 

Superstar junior PG Lawrent Rice and rising sophomore sharpshooter Juan Cranford has led the attack, and did it again with a 53-36 win against Turpin.

R.J. Mukes also did some damage as well, as he has picked it up in the 2nd part of the season.

With the win the Warriors will face a tough Fairfield squad, who boasts 4 legitimate D-1 prospects and beat the Warriors (by 1 point) earlier this season. Can the Wayne train rise to the challenge? 

Fairmont Handles Biz, Set For Third and Final Battle Against Centerville in Regionals 

The Fairmont Firebirds have been on a roll all season, and they took that energy to set off the GWOC sweep in motion with a convincing 60-43 win. Star F Dasan Doucet  and PG Anthony Taylor led the Firebirds to the win.

Can Fairmont figure out the juggernaut that is Centerville in the next round?

We will see, but until then, it has been a banner year for the Firebirds.  

D-2 Cincy Schools Stop Dayton Boys as  C-J &  Carroll fall.  

The State representative last year, Chaminade, lost to Woodward and one of the most prolific scorers in OHSAA history. 

Paul McMillan IV scored double figures, along with 3 other players, and the Woodward defense flustered the Eagles offfensive attack in the District Final. The different defenses was able to keep star sniper Johnathan Powell Jr at bay, and give Woodward the juice they needed to finish the job. 

#1 seed Alter blows by opponent, Ready for Regional Matchup vs Linden McKinley

The Alter Knights showed why they will be a force, after blowing by Batavia 75-50 to win the District Final. Jacob Conner, the Marshall commit, was dominant throughout the game, as Batavia had no answer for the dynamic 6'9 stud of a player. Add the intensity and elite skillset of the guard play, and the Knights look like a team headed for a OHSAA State Berth.

D-3 Meadowdale Stops CHCA, Reaches Regionals Behind Benson, Reaves, Caldwell 

The Meadowdale Lions were away from home, and it was starting to look like Christian Hills were gonna get the home win of sorts, as they held a lead midway through the 3rd quarter.

But the Lions would stop the turnovers that was forced in the 1st half, and Lee Benson would lead the Lions to a comback victory and the Lions first Disctict Title since the 90's.

The trio of Lee Benson III, Kalerrio Reaves and Sean Caldwell led the charge as the Lions showed why they have the pieces to get to a OHSAA State berth.

They will face a Georgetown squad who knocked off #1 Versailles, and is playing with a great deal of confidence. 

"This is truly a blessing and im so proud of the kids, the coaches, and the Lions organization," head coach Dwayne Chastain said on the court after the game. 

D-4 Tri-Village Continues the Dominance; Could They Be Headed for Huge Possble Matchup vs  Botkins? 

 Tri-Village has garnered plenty of success over the years, and they are back into the Regional after a convincing win over Fayetteville-Perry 64-29 to secure a D-4 District title. With Botkins winning as well, could we see a Botkins - Tri-Village Regional Championship? Surely looks like it. They will face a tough East Knox team who has had a great run as well. 

Botkins Handles Ripley Union Lewis Huntington 73-39 to grab another District Title and move to the Regionals where they will face Springfield Catholic Central, who was able to survive and cut the District nets down.

Centerville Pounds Tecumseh Early, Garners Lopsided Win

The Centerville Elks went crazy on Tecumseh, as they built a 27-2 lead in the 1st quarter and never looked back. The halftime score was 51-8. The defending D-1 champions will now travel to Cincinnati for tphe District Finals. 

Meadowdale Stops Shrout, Shawnee as Reaves, Benson Shine

The Lions was able to out scrap Preble Shawnee late to grab their first sectional title since 2011. The Lions were down 3 with under 2 minutes remaining, but Kalerrio Reaves and Lee Benson III hit some key baskets and free throws down the stretch and secured the deal. Mason Shrout, the star sophomore had a couple of attempts but wasn't able to hit, as the defense locked in on the elite talent, who dropped 27 in the loss.

Sophomore Sensation Juan Cranford Jr Leads Attack as Wayne Powers Past Franklin

Juan Cranford has watched Lawrent Rice be an absolute star all season and has had a few moments of his own as well during the season. But since the OHSAA tournament, he has stepped up his level, and with it the Wayne Warriors have elevated as well, after defeating Franklin on Friday night.

 Cranford would unleash a fury on the Wildcats in the 2nd quarter, hitting 5 bombs and literally pushing the lead from a 6-point advantage to a 15-point burst in the matter of a 5-minute stretch. The game was never in reach after that, as Lawrent Rice, R.J. Mukes and the rest of the squad would make sure of that in the double-digit win. 

Fairmont holds off Creek

Beavercreek fought and had a tight game against the Fairmont Firebirds, but key ball handling and great decision making by all-gwoc guards Anthony Johnson and Eli Marrero led the Firebirds to the victory. Coach Steve Pittman had the Beavers in the game, as all-gwoc forward was doing work. But when the chips were down, the Firebirds were at their best. 

C-J Stops Tipp, Readies for District Finals 

The Chaminade Eagles got a great test this week, and were able to pass both of the tests with flying colors, as they held off Dunbar earlier in the week, and then stopped Tippecanoe in the Sectional Final to grab their 2nd straight Sectional. Coach Szabo should be happy with the way his team has responded despite the adversity of losing the ultimate "Middle Man" of the program in Richard Kidd. Johnathon Powell and Luke Chandler has led the offensive attack with Evan Dickey running the show. 

Top Seed Alter Rolls 

The Alter Knights continued their great season with another Sectional title, after knocking off a tough Bellbrook squad 75-55. The #1 seed in the D-2 Region, the Knights were led by a balanced effort in the big win. These Knights are thinking State berth. 

Trotwood Falls to Carroll

The Trotwood Rams season came to an end this weekend as they took a loss to the Carroll Patriots in the Sectional Final. Carroll used hot shooting and a balanced scoring attack to knock off the Rams in the sectional final. 

Tri-Village, Botkins Still Active

Botkins, the D-4 Champion, are still in the hunt after a big win in the sectional final. Tri-Village, a favorite as well, won too, so expect to see these two teams clash for a chance at a OHSAA State berth somewhere down the line.

Middies Cinderella Run Falls Short in OT

The Middletown Middies almost pulled off the upset of the OHSAA tourney, but wasn't able to finish the deal in a heartbreaking 61-58 OT loss in the sectional final. Under the new coaching staff, led by Moss, showed why they could be a force come next season.

Week 8 Recap: Springfield Rolls; Trotwood Wins 3rd Straight; Piqua Stops Tipp; MVL, GCL, GWOC, Recap

Springfield Routs Centerville in Game of the Week

           Cats Homecoming King Delian Bradley 

The Centerville Elks came out with a big bang, as they jumped out on the #4 ranked Springfield Wildcats. Hearing about the shutout streak, the Elks were able to strike first, after a onside kick was recovered by Centerville, to the suprise of everyone, especially the Wildcats. The Elks would capitalize on that. 

But after that, it was all Springfield as Tae'Sean Smoot would direct 4 scoring drives in the 1st half, the last coming on a 43-yard FG as time expired at the half. The Cats would jump all over Centerville 24-7 en route to a route 41-7. Smoot was in complete control as he ran for a TD and passed for 3 more to give the Cats a nice cushion heading into halftime.

Chase Harrison, arguably the best QB in Southwest Ohio, was unable to find open recievers, as Cam Smith, the dynamic WR for Centerville, was harassed by the Cats elite secondary, led by Delian Bradley.

The running game was shut off as the vaunted front 7 of the Cats defense was downright nasty. While the streak ended at 14, a new streak was started as the Cats didn't let Centerville score for the next 3 quarters. 

With the win, it puts Springfield in 1st place and in position to win the GWOC outright with wins in next 2 games. 

Trotwood Wins 3rd Straight, Stop Dunbar

The Trotwood Rams continued to play good football as they were able to stop Dunbar 26-7 in a non-conference game at Welcome Stadium on Friday night. Both teams had came into the season starting slow, but both teams were riding a 2-game winning streak, which made the game "Must see TV."

Trotwood would ride the running game and the hot hand of sophomore QB Tim Stephens to move to 3-4 on the season. With 2 more games to go, can the Rams turn their whole season around and get to a playoff berth? With the loss, Dunbar now falls to 4-3 on the season. 

While the defense played solid, the offense was not able to get it going for the Wolverines. Despite efforts from Player of the Year Candidate Lamar Payton, it was to no avail as Dunbar looks to regroup this week. 

If the Rams can find a way to get a couple more wins, they could find a playoff berth. 

Piqua Wins 8th Straight Game, Blows By Tipp to Sit Alone In MVL 

The Piqua Indians are known to be a running team, a ground and pound type. 

But this season it has been different, as the passing game has been just as prevalent. After a fast start, and a long delay, the Indians now sit at 8-0 after a 42-23 win over Tippecanoe for the battle of  1st place in the Miami Valley League. The Indians rode the big play ability of its star junior QB and another WR exploded onto the scene as Piqua continued its dominant play, and stays in the OHSAA State rankings as well. 

The Indians are one of the top teams in the Region, and have looked every bit the part, with explosive athletes all over the field. 

Badin Stops C-J in Shootout 

Badin showed whey they will be a major player come playoff time as they defeated Chaminade in a shootout. A week ago the Badin squad was able to shut down Alter to 0 points. This time they would pull out the offensive arsenal to outlast Coach Colvin and the Eagles. 

With the win Badin sits at 8-0 and ranked highly in the OHSAA state polls. For C-J, they sit at 3-3 with 2 games left.

Despite the loss the Eagles still showed they have the ability to strike on offense, and will need that to win the next 2 games. 

 

Wayne Rolls to Win Fueled by Running Game, Late D Stop

The Wayne Warriors had gotten hot lately, and they continue to ride that wave as the running game was too much for Fairmont to overcome. However, Fairmont had their opportunities to tie the game. The Firebirds would score late in the game on a Malek Hillon flea-flicker TD pass to pull it to 17-15. 

But Wayne would stop the 2-point conversion pass and the Warriors would rejoice, knowing that at 6-2 they have all but solidified a spot in the playoffs. 

Meanwhile Fairmont sits at 5-3 and needs to win 1 of the next 2 games to  guarantee a spot in the playoffs. The running game was powerful, amassing over 300 yards. 

Stebbins Keeps Playoff Hopes Alive With Big Win 

The Stebbins Indians knew that the game with Xenia was must win, and on Homecoming Night, Stebbins showed out with a 42-7 blowout win over the Bucs. Xenia was sitting atop the division, with Stebbins right behind them. Now both teams sit at 5-3 with 2 games left.

Senior Star RB Omar Holloway did the heavy lifting on the ground, as he scored a TD and punished defenders with his powerful running style. QB Nate Keller has been dynamic all season, and the duo once again has this Indians team in the running for a playoff berth. 

Defensively the team was led by Dalton King, who has showed all season that he is one of the best defensive players in the conference and the Region. 

Alter Finds W Column with Defensive Effort

The Alter Knights were able to get into the winning column after a losing streak and run their record to 3-5 on the season. In desperation mode of sorts, the Knights were able to put together a balanced effort to get them back in the right direction.

 With 16 teams making the playoffs instead of 8, if Alter wins its last 2 games, they could find themselves back in the playoffs. 

Valley View Knocks Off Franklin

The Valley View Spartans was able to upend Franklin as they look to grab another playoff spot. Franklin

Thursday Games: 

Northmont hammers Butler, stays undefeated 
 Northmont would start the game off with a TD off a failed punt and never look back, dominating Butler 49-16.
Miles Johnson threw for 5 TD's as the Bolts struck early and often.
 The Bolts move to 4-0 on the season.
 Butler falls to 2-2.


Dunbar gets first win of season, stops Ponitz in shootout as Packnett Jr. steps up
Sophmore QB Greg Packnett, Jr. knew that if the Dunbar Wolverines would get their first victory on the season?
He would have to step it up.
And step it up he did, as he carried the Wolverines to a 42-33 game.
Literally.
Packnett rushed for 4 TDs, including the Game Clincher late in the 4th as the Wolverines held off a pesky Ponitz squad for the 1st win in Dayton Public School League this season.
Ponitz was prepared for battle and with 3 fumble recoveries (for TDs), 2 by Rising DB Donyea McNary  and a pick 6 INT by Ward, they stayed in the game, and almost won it.

Packnett, the son of the legendary 2-sport star Greg Packnett who dominated the Miami Valley in the 90's, now has become his sons motivational coach and gives him advice when necessary.

The advice to Greg Jr in crunch time?
"Stay composed, make plays, and get this W."

Mission accomplished.
 The Wolverines move to 1-3 on the season, while Ponitz falls to 0-4.

Friday Recap Week 4 Games:

C-J routs Purcell, stays #1 in State Poll

Chaminade  handled business once again as they crushed Purcell Marian 38-0 behind Junior Sensation Ryan Minor, as he threw for 3 TDs, Quincy Johnson ran for 2 TD's and caught another, Marquis Henry ran for 114, the defense caused 3 turnovers and it was all Eagles. C-J moves to 4-0.

Up next? a big showdown with undefeated Carroll.

Miamisburg knocks off Wayne , stays undefeated 

The Burg was rockin' as they used a stout running game, a D that wouldn't give and a QB who was in tune to a suprising 30-13 win against the Wayne Warriors.

Early in the game Wayne had a chance to seize control, but could only muster Field goals, which would bite them in the butt later in the game. 

Once Miamisburg got momentum in the 3rd quarter, it was no looking back as QB Tate Vongsy directed a offense that would roll up over 225 yards on the ground, 77 by Vongsy himself. Jon Yerkins dominated in the game, as he ran for 2 TD's, 100+ yards, and snatched a sweet INT as well. 

Wayne had a shot to get into game early in the 4th but the INT by Yerkins, and a 9 min drive that was mostly punishing runs, sealed the fate of the Wayne Train. 

After the game we was able to speak to top Ohio Prospect CB Cameron Moore Perry, and he felt like they are ready to take the next step and compete for the GWOC Championship this season. 

Wayne falls to 2-2 while Miamisburg stays undefeated (4-0). 

Springfield crushes Centerville, shows they're no joke

The Wildcats have took some tough losses to the Centerville Elks in the last few years. 

So it was easy for Springfield to play top level football as they have done all season. There was just a little more purpose, knowing they could possibly keep the Elks winless (0-4). 

And after the 1st quarter, it was all Cats as they rolled over Centerville 49-6 en route to their first 4-0 season in a while. 

The Cats plowed Centerville's defense for over 450 yards rushing as the Elks had no answers for the backfield trio of Jeff Tolliver (145 yds, 3 TD's), Tavion Smoot (165 yds) and Dual threat QB Raheim Moss, who ran for 160 and 3 TD's himself. 

Moss did throw a TD to Kentucky Commit and All-Ohio DB Moses Douglass, who was rock solid on defense as well.

Defensively Isaiah Gibson, the 4 star OL who also committed to  Kentucky, was dominant, with 2 sacks, a forced fumble, and was the anchor on the O-Line which dominated on the night. 

Springfield moves to 4-0 on the season. 

Trotwood gets back on track as Defense Dominates 

The Rams had taken 2 of the best teams in the Midwest, so when they would face a Sidney team without their 2 star players of a year ago.

With that being said, it was all Trotwood as they put up 41 against the Yellow Jackets in a balanced effort for the Rams. 

While the offense was solid, the defense was spectacular, forcing 7 turnovers, 4 sacks, and wreaking havoc all night. 

Kennedy Coates once again showed why he's one of the very best defenders in Ohio, amassing 2 sacks while dominating the line of scrimmage, Jerrell Sanders led the team with 8 tackles and a INT, 

Sophomore Sensation Ravae Garrett snatched a pick 6 and had 2 INTs overall and 2-sport star DB Carl Blanton, had 2 INTs himself. 

Trotwood moves to 2-2 on the season, while Sidney falls to 1-3.

Belmont falls to St. Francis DeSales on road 

The Bison brutal schedule continues to give them a tough road, as they fell to St Francis DeSales on the road. While the Bison are 0-4, there is still a sense of a playoff run for Belmont. 

They have taken on some of the top teams in the state, and hope that it will pay off later in the season. 

Meadowdale wins as team "No Call, No Show" strategy backfires

The Lions were awarded a forfeiture as Reigning Thunder Academy pulled a "No Call, No Show" as they didn't show up for their game as part of the doubleheader at Welcome Stadium on Friday Night.

In what was supposed to be the 2nd game of the doubleheader (Thurgood vs Winton Woods was 1st game) Meadowdale was looking to move to 2-2, but then realized that nobody would return a call, a text, a email, nothing.

Lions Head Coach Brown was befuddled, to say the least.

Reigning Thunder Academy is a prep school located in Columbus area. 

Just no call? Or no show? 

What organization does that?

In the meantime, Meadowdale moves to 2-2 on the season, the only team in Dayton Public Schools with a  winning record at the moment.  Congrats to the Lions.

Troy drops 62 on Stebbins

The Troy Trojans once again look like they are headed for a  playoff push, after a 62-0 drubbing of Stebbins.

 QB Brayden Siler threw for 315 and 5 TD's while Jaydon Culp-Bishop ran for 130 and 4 TD's as the Trojans stay undefeated (4-0) and atop the GWOC Standings.

Sam Jackson 11 tackles and 1.5 sacks led the D.

Alter wins 3rd straight 

Alter seems to have put their troubles behind, after a loss in game 1 to Fairmont. 

The offense accounted for 622 yards of total offense in shutting down Roger Bacon 49-14. 

The win pushes the Knights to 3-1 on the season.

Winton Woods shuts out Thurgood

Winton Woods jumped out on Thurgood and never looked back, scoring the first 52 points of the game, before winning 59-6 at Welcome Stadium.

The loss drops Thurgood to 0-4 on the season.

Tipp blows by West Carrollton in shootout 

Tippecanoe bounced back from a tough loss last week to win a shootout with West Carrollton 56-26 as they ran over, around, and through the Pirates defense for a whopping 500 yards on the ground. However, West Carrollton did put up a fight and offensively has shown they can compete, as rising QB Triston Dillon threw for 350 yards and 3 TD's in the loss. Austin Jones caught 2 more TD's while Jordan Ward accounted for almost 200 yards of total offense and a TD to boot.

Tipp moves to 2-2 while West Carrollton falls to 1-3. 

Carroll stops McNick, sets up showdown with C-J next week

The Carroll Patriots have been rolling all season, and after another big win over Cincy McNicholas  38-27, the Patriots now have their sights set on the big Matchup at C-J on Friday Night. 

Carroll jumped out to a 21-0 lead after 2 big TD runs by rising RB Fred Butts (36 and 37 yards) and a Pick-6 INT by 2 way baller Will Severt set the tone and gave the Patriots all the cushion they needed to secure the win. 

Carroll now readies for the Showdown with Chaminade which should make the FootballU4U Top Games this week.

Tolliver was unstoppable, running for 145, 3 TD's in the big win over Centerville

Isaiah Gibson - (OL, DL) Springfield

Gibson was unstoppable on both sides of the ball, nabbing 2 sacks, a Forced Fumble, and leading a offense to over 460 yards rushing on the night. Gibson recently committed to Kentucky.

Josh Burritt - (RB) Tippecanoe

Burritt ran for 297 yards on the Pirates defense, with 2 TD's to boot in the big win

Triston Dillon - (QB) West Carrollton 

Dillion dropped 350 with 3 TD's in a loss to Tipp.

Jordan Ward - (RB, LB) West Carrollton

Ward, a freshman, accounted for almost 200 yards and a TD in the loss vs Tipp

Donyea McNary (DB) - Ponitz 

McNary scored twice on fumble recoveries in the loss.

Carl Blanton (DB) - Trotwood 

The 2 way star had 2 picks on the night in a big win for Trotwood.
