CITY LEAGUE RECAP: Thurgood Roll past Lions; Dunbar forfeits game after dispute; Belmont falls on Final Play, Madden 20 Party

In a wild first week of HS Football in the Miami Valley, lets look at what happened in Dayton Public Schools:

Week 1 DHSS 🏈🏈 CITY LEAGUE HEADLINES:
📰📰📰

Belmont Falls on Final Play to Troy in OT 28-27
Belmont came into game understanding that to go to the next level and make a run through the playoffs?

You gotta play a tougher schedule.

With that, the Bison took on Playoff team from last year in Troy.
In a dogfight, the game was 21-15 late in the 4th quarter when Belmont Rian Reeves Jr directed a drive that put the Bison in the end zone.
 Tie game.
Go for 2 or kick the FG?
The Bison go for 2, misses 2-point conversion, game tied.
The game goes into OT at 21, which Troy scored 1st.
Belmont scores as well, but missed the 2-point conversion and the game was over.
When asked why they didn't put the kicker back in to try any extra points after he made his first one (albeit wobbly)?

He had just got on the roster last week, and the coaching staff felt like their offense could get it done.

Tavon Hardwick and Rian Reeves led the Bison who fall to 0-1.

DUNBAR Forfeits Game, Falls to Roger Bacon as Player Confronts Official; Fair Or Foul?

Dunbar football team wanted to kickoff the new 2019 season in a positive way.
With a boisterous crowd, a talented team, a hungry coaching staff, and a proud organization who's searching to get back to prominence after 2 tough seasons?

The Wolverines were thinking playoffs.

However, despite the hype, and a huge, excited crowd at Welcome Stadium, the season started as badly as it could, and ended even worse as Cincinnati Roger Bacon won 23-8 due to the officials calling the game.

Did the officials pull the plug too early?
Lets analyze later.

On the first play of the game Roger Bacon ran the opening kickoff back for a TD (Made 2-pt conversion) to jump out to a 8-0 lead.

After another score by Roger Bacon, Dunbar, led by Rising QB Greg Packnett Jr, would score on a beautiful pass play after having one called back by a penalty, which also killed the Wolverines. With the 2-point conversion, the Wolverines were back in the game (16-8).

However, Roger Bacon would score again (23-8), setting up the scene for the tragic, fateful ending.

Late into 2nd quarter, Roger Bacon was backed up close to their own end zone, trying to give themselves a big lead into half.
But #2 of Dunbar, got upset at what seemed to be a player for Roger Bacon.

After a skirmish, the Refs tried to stop #2, but after #2 got into it with the Roger Bacon players (and had to be restrained by his own players) #2 looked to be headed towards the Referee.
He was then stopped by his players, which he tried again and was held back, before leaving the field.
In the first skirmish with the official, apparently #2 head butted the official, causing a frenzy by his players and the officials;
The officials then briefly met, ultimately calling the game.

Question is, should the WHOLE GAME be stopped?
Or should #2 been kicked out and the game resumed?

This year OHSAA is cracking down on the abuse against officials, and this is a perfect example of how you will not be able to berate and go after the men in stripes.
Afterwards, Coach Freed was hurt and disgusted with his player.
While the question remains, could the officials handled it better?

Probably.
But if the official felt threatened for his life, what can you say?
Have to control your emotions. Even in football.
There are reports that the kid will be expelled from school, per policy standards.

Dunbar falls to 0-1 on the season.
Our question is:
What should the punishment be for a student who attacks a official during a contest?

PONITZ loses in defensive battle against Columbus Beechcroft 15-12

The Panthers, led by Coach Ryan Jackson, was resdy to play, and after 2 sweet offensive plays and a stout defensive 1st half, they led 12-7.
However Beechcroft would score the only TD of the 2nd half as Ponitz fumbled a couple of golden opportunities to snatch the game away in the 2nd half, one late in the 4th quarter.

DB Hoskins Jr, had 2 INTs and will be a force Defensively, along with that good DLine.
Panthers fall to 0-1 on the season.

Thurgood stifles Meadowdale in the Dayton Weekly "Game of The Week"

In the Dayton Weekly Newspaper "Game of the Week" Meadowdale would take on Thurgood Marshall.

Both teams were in the middle of the pack last season.
But on this Saturday?

Thurgood showed they could be a team to be reckoned with, as they shut out Meadowdale 28-0 at Welcome Stadium.
Led by Star of the Game-  RB - DB J. Russell on the Offense and Rising Dewberry with a TD return and pressure all night, sealed the deal for the Cougars.

Thurgood looked as good as any team in the area,  and Coach Brian Carter and his staff are upbeat about the chance at a City League Championship and a playoff berth this season.
